Contacts with mental health services before suicide: a comparison of Indigenous with non-Indigenous Australians

Abstract: Indigenous Australians die by suicide at a rate twice higher than the non-Indigenous population, yet they are significantly less likely to seek professional help for mental health concerns. Help-seeking behavior among Indigenous Australians at risk of suicide should be promoted thorough provision of culturally appropriate services.

“…The brief nature of the survey prevented us from including a detailed question regarding caller's ethnicity. Instead, we were specifically interested in identifying those callers who were of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander origin as these individuals are at increased risk of suicide (Sveticic et al 2012). Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander origin was summarised as a binary variable (yes/no).…”

For this to occur, specialised suicide bereavement training that takes into account specific cultural beliefs is required (Botha et al, 2009;Sveticic, Milner, & De Leo, 2012). Further, since nurses and other health care professionals have initial contact with individuals and families bereaved by suicide, they should be well informed about relevant services in the area where these people can be referred.…”

“…In 2016, the suicide rate among Australians was 11.7 deaths per 100,000 (Australian Bureau of Statistics, ). Many people who die by suicide are not in contact with health services prior to their death (Hunt et al., ; Isometsä, ; Sveticic, Milner, & De Leo, ). Therefore, family members and friends of people at risk of suicide have an important role in identifying risk, offering support, ensuring safety, and encouraging professional help.…”
