This paper discusses special features of mechanical behaviour of coals discovered using depth-sensing indentation (DSI) techniques along with other traditional methods of material testing. Many of the special features are caused by the presence of multiscale complex heterogeneous internal structure within the samples and brittleness of some coal components. Experimental methodology for studying mechanical properties of coals and other natural extreme materials like bones are discussed.It is argued that values of microhardness of bituminous coals correlate strongly with the maximum load, therefore the use of this parameter in application to coals may ⋆ Research was supported by the Russian Science Foundation (grant #16-17-10217) be meaningless. For analysis of the force-displacement curves obtained by DSI, both Oliver-Pharr and Galanov-Dub approaches are employed. Hence, the standard approaches to mechanical testing of coals should be re-examined.

Classical methods of material testing become extremely complicated or impossible at micro-/nanoscale. At the same time, depth-sensing indentation (DSI) can be applied without much change at various length scales. However, interpretation of the DSI data needs to be done carefully, as length-scale dependent effects, such as adhesion, should be taken into account. This review paper is focused on different DSI approaches and factors that can lead to erroneous results, if conventional DSI methods are used for micro-/nanomechanical testing, or testing soft materials. We also review our recent advances in the development of a method that intrinsically takes adhesion effects in DSI into account: the Borodich–Galanov (BG) method, and its extended variant (eBG). The BG/eBG methods can be considered a framework made of the experimental part (DSI by means of spherical indenters), and the data processing part (data fitting based on the mathematical model of the experiment), with such distinctive features as intrinsic model-based account of adhesion, the ability to simultaneously estimate elastic and adhesive properties of materials, and non-destructive nature.

Indentation of a thin elastic film attached through an interlayer to a rigid support is studied. Because the common interpretations of depth-sensing indentation tests are not applicable to such structured coatings, usually various approximating functions are employed to take into account influence of the interlayer. Contrary to the common approaches, a strict mathematical approach is applied here to study the problems under consideration assuming that the thickness of the two-layer structure is much less than characteristic dimension of the region of contact between the indenter and the coating. A simple derivation of asymptotic relations for displacements and stresses is presented. It is shown that often the leading term approximation to the non-adhesive contact problems is equivalent to contact problem for a Winkler-Fuss elastic foundation with an effective elastic constant. Because the contact between the indenter and the film at nanoscale may be greatly affected by adhesion, the adhesive problem for these bilayer coatings is studied in the framework of the JKR (Johnson, Kendall, and Roberts) theory of adhesion. Assuming the indenter shape near the tip has some deviation from its nominal shape and using the leading term approximation of the layered coatings, the explicit expressions are derived for the values of the pull-off force and for the corresponding critical contact radius of adhesive contact region.
