Contact recording review

Abstract: Various contact recording technologies for hard disk drives are reviewed. The advantages and disadvantages of each approach to contact recording are analyzed. Experimental detection methods and simulation models for the contact force are introduced. Some important technologies related to contact recording are addressed. The effects of lubricant and the short range forces on contact recording are discussed, and the dynamic flying characteristics of a slider with spherical pad at trailing edge are studied. It is… Show more

“…Fitting curves based on (2) are also shown. These fitting curves were extrapolated to the zero value on the friction force axis, and the adhesion forces were estimated using these extrapolation curves [8], [9] (1) (2) where is the total load force, is the applied load, , is the load force due to the adhesion, is the friction coefficient, is the reduced curvature radius of the sphere and the plane, and is the adhesive energy of the sphere and the plane. The friction forces at an applied load of 0 mN and the adhesion forces on disks with different thicknesses of Z-tetraol and Z-dol were derived from the fitting curves.…”

“…Further, lubricant transfer from the disk surface to the slider surface sometimes occurs at the head-disk interface (HDI) with such a small clearance. Therefore, as an alternative, the surfingrecording HDI system was proposed by Liu et al as a means of increasing the areal density of an HDD [1], [2]. The adhesion and friction behaviors that occur as the magnetic slider approaches the magnetic disk surface need clarification to better understand the pickup mechanism and achieve stable surfing recording.…”

“…The most common method used for this control is to embed an electrical resistive heater in the slider that will cause the transducer area to protrude closer to the disk, as is shown in Figure 6 [19][20][21]. At some point the interface may need to be designed to withstand intermittent or continuous contact [22][23][24][25][26][27].…”

“…In the hard disk drive industry, there have been many efforts to reduce the gap between the read/write head and the magnetic disk -flying height-to increase the recording density of hard disk drives (Liu et al 2007; Lee and Strom 2008;Hua et al 2010;Vakis and Polycarpou 2010). Nowadays, the flying height has been reduced to less than 10 nm and is being decreased to contact (Wood 2000).…”
