Athletes develop dermatoses that are directly related to participation in their particular sport. The specific causes of these conditions have been categorized as mechanical, environmental, and infectious. 1 Rowers are highly susceptible to certain skin conditions from all three of these causes due to the volume of training, the equipment, and the outdoor and aquatic nature of the sport. Familiarity with the demands of a sport and the equipment used are often overlooked aspects of prevention when it comes to skin conditions. 1 Athletic trainers and therapists (ATs) are better able to recognize and manage these skin conditions in rowers when the sport specific causes are understood. The purpose of this paper is to present an overview of the skin conditions common to rowers. Specifically, we will discuss the causes, clinical presentation, and treatments of these conditions. Readers are also encouraged to review the position statement on skin diseases in athletes in general by the National Athletic Trainers' Association. 2 Mechanical CausesMechanical causes include shear or friction forces and repetitive impacts. Rowers experience significant friction between the following areas: the hands and oar handle, the back side ("rump") and boat seat, and the calves and seat tracks. The severity of friction or impact these specific areas experience depend on factors that include boat design, oar handle material, seat design, body type, and stroke technique. BlistersClinical presentation. Blisters are painful vesicles and bullae on anterior surfaces of the palm and fingers (Figure 1). Blisters are usually found on the palmar aspect of the hands and fingers and can develop an accumulation of pus or blood. They are caused by excessive friction between the rower's hands and the oar handle as a result of a repetitive motion during the stroke termed "feathering." Gripping the oar handle too tightly, which is common especially in novice rowers, can contribute to blister development. Coaches should attempt to prevent rowers from gripping the oar handle too tightly not only to prevent blisters, but to also avoid the rowers' forearms from quickly fatiguing, which is both painful and counterproductive.The oar is feathered at two points during the stroke: right before the oar enters the water and right after it exits the water. At these two points, the hand closest to the rigger, termed the "inside hand," grips and rotates the oar through a 45° range of motion. As a result, the inside hand sustains blistering on the palmar aspect of the hand. Meanwhile, the opposite hand, termed the "outside hand," is responsible for pulling Rowers are uniquely and highly susceptible to certain skin conditions. OBJECTIVE: There are no comprehensive surveys relating the reported high prevalence of asthma and allergic diseases in athletes to comorbidities and immune changes associated with intense chronic exercise. This 12-year survey aims to evaluate several clinical, functional and immunological parameters in order to assess features, trend and burden of asthma, allergy, infections and autoimmune diseases, in a large homogeneous population of Olympic athletes. METHODS: Six hundred and fiftynine Italian Olympic athletes were studied through four cross-sectional surveys performed between 2000 and 2012 before the Summer and Winter Olympics. Clinical diagnosis of allergic, autoimmune and infectious diseases was complemented by: skin-prick tests (n = 569); pulmonary function tests (n = 415); total (n = 158) and specific (n = 72) serum IgE; serum autoantibodies (n = 30), cytokines and growth factors (n = 92); flow cytometry (n = 135). RESULTS: The prevalence of asthma and/or exerciseinduced bronchoconstriction was 14.7%, with a significant increase (P = 0.04) from 2000 (11.3%) to 2008 (17.2%). The prevalence of rhinitis, conjunctivitis, skin allergic diseases and anaphylaxis was 26.2%, 20.0%, 14.8% and 1.1%, respectively. Sensitization to inhalant allergens was documented in 49.0% of athletes, being 32.7% in 2000 and 56.5% in 2008 (P < 0.0001). Food, drug and venom allergy was present in 7.1%, 5.0% and 2.1% of athletes, respectively. The high prevalence of asthma and allergy was associated with recurrent upper respiratory tract (10.3%) and herpes (18.2%) infections, an abnormal T cell subset profile and a general down-regulation of serum cytokines with a significantly lower IFN-/IL-4 ratio. CONCLUSION: A chronic and intense physical exercise may cause a transient immunodepression with a preferential shift to a Th2 response, associated with abnormalities of the respiratory tract. Each year in the United States over 80 million people participate in bat-and-ball sports, for example baseball and softball. Cricket, the world's second most popular sport, is enjoyed by hundreds of millions of participants in such countries as India, Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand, Bangladesh, South Africa, West Indies, Sri Lanka, United Kingdom, and Zimbabwe. Although any player can develop skin disease as a result of participation in these bat-and-ball sports, competitive team athletes are especially prone to skin problems related to infection, trauma, allergy, solar exposure, and other causes. These diseases can produce symptoms that hinder individual athletic performance and participation. In this review, we discuss the diagnosis and best-practice management of skin diseases that can develop as a result of participation in baseball, softball, and cricket.
