Abstract:It is well documented that flotation has high economic viability for the beneficiation of valuable minerals when their main ore bodies contain magnesium (Mg) carbonates such as dolomite and magnesite. Flotation separation of Mg carbonates from their associated valuable minerals (AVMs) presents several challenges, and Mg carbonates have high levels of adverse effects on separation efficiency. These complexities can be attributed to various reasons: Mg carbonates are naturally hydrophilic, soluble, and exhibit similar surface characteristics as their AVMs. This study presents a compilation of various parameters, including zeta potential, pH, particle size, reagents (collectors, depressant, and modifiers), and bio-flotation, which were examined in several investigations into separating Mg carbonates from their AVMs by froth flotation.

2Froth flotation was invented in the nineteenth century. Since then, many laboratories have been committed to both fundamental and applied research on the collection of particles by dispersed gas bubbles in aqueous solutions of electrolytes, in particular those working on the processing of natural resources. However, despite the tremendous progress made in the characterization of particles and their surfaces and understanding particle-bubble interactions, supported by detailed recordings of gas bubble attachments to both bulk specimens and particles, the flotation process remains poorly correlated with the wetting characteristics of particle surfaces. In fact, the contact angles used frequently to describe the wettability of mineral surfaces remain among the most controversial, misunderstood and misinterpreted values in mineral processing literature.

Hemimorphite Flotation with 1-hydroxydodecylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid and Its Mechanism

1-hydroxydodecylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HDDPA) was prepared and first applied in flotation of hemimorphite. HDDPA exhibited superior flotation performances for recovery of hemimorphite in comparison with lauric acid, and it also possessed good selectivity against quartz flotation under pH 7.0-11.0. Contact angle results revealed that HDDPA preferred to attach on hemimorphite rather than quartz and promoted the hydrophobicity of hemimorphite surfaces. In the presence of HDDPA anions, the zeta potential of hemimorphite particles shifted to more negative value even if hemimorphite was negatively charged, inferring a strong chemisorption of hemimorphite to HDDPA. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) recommended that HDDPA might anchor on hemimorphite surfaces through bonding the oxygen atoms of its P(=O)-O groups with surface Zn(II) atoms. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) gave additional evidence that the Zn(II)-HDDPA surface complexes were formed on hemimorphite.
