Consumerism and the Crisis: Wither ‘the American Dream’?

Abstract: Starting with an inquiry into the socio-material foundations of American-style consumer capitalism as it emerged under Fordism and evolved under neoliberalism, this article seeks to outline the origins of the present economic crisis and the possible implications for the future of consumerism. The article argues that the ongoing crisis in the USA is not a regular cyclical downturn but signifies the end of finance-driven consumer capitalism as an accumulation regime whose key features can be summed up as debt-fi… Show more

“…There may be a cultural shift happening also with respect to cars-for instance, more people may be deciding that they do not really need a car. 25 For a general discussion of a possible end of the consumerist era, see Ivanova (2011). Finally, keep in mind sustainability and environment.…”

“…The focus is on holding the line on increasing governmental revenues by either not allowing taxes to rise, or in some versions cutting tax rates even further. Middle class families, facing no real wage growth for almost four decades and driven to ever increasing debt, saw this house of cards (figuratively and literally) brought crashing down by the financial meltdown of 2008 (Ivanova, 2011). Our Federal Government has systematically passed laws that favored the very rich, generated increasing inequality, facilitated the expansion of the market and capitalist logic into our personal lives, and through these policies reinforced the political and ideological landscape putting ever more power into the hands of fewer and fewer people.…”
