Consumer laundry practices in Germany

Abstract: Sustainability is a guiding principle for a responsible, future‐oriented 21st century lifestyle and this already begins in private households with the daily household tasks. Approximately 25% of an average household's electricity consumption is required to do the laundry and dishwashing – 5% alone is for washing clothes with a corresponding energy consumption of 6 billion kilowatt hours. In addition, 600 000 tonnes of detergent and 330 million cubic metres of water are used for textile care in Germany. These f… Show more

“…Washing programs and their parameters based on metering data from 100 households in Germany (Berkholz et al [68] as cited in Tables 3 and 12 in Gooijer and Stamminger [70] Table 5. Average wash load and temperature for different washing programs in Germany (n = 2763 wash cycles) ( Table 5 and Figure 8 from Kruschwitz et al [69] These studies show that both the washing temperature and program used vary between fibers. Even though the wool laundry load is smaller than the average load, the energy consumption per kg textiles is still less than the average.…”

“…The results show that a cotton cycle was the most commonly used, and that both cotton and synthetics were washed at higher temperature and heavier laundry load than wool and delicates such as silk. Kruschwitz, et al [69] studied laundering habits of 236 German households during a 28-day test period. The households documented all 2867 washing cycles in a diary including weight of laundry and amount of detergents (Table 5).…”

“…The consumer habit in actual dosing of powder, liquid and tablet laundry detergents was based on a comprehensive study performed in Germany (Kruschwitz et al 2014). In the absence of comparable data for all countries, we assumed that the variability in product dosing measured in Germany was representative for all countries.…”

“…To get to energy consumption in kWh/kg also the load has to be known. In [2] and [15] a mean load of 3.7 kg/cycle is reported, while in [7] and [8] a load of 75 % is mentioned, which is comparable to 3.7 kg/load for a 5 kg washing machine. In Table 7, this load is applied on the data as presented in the tables 2 and 3 to calculate the average energy consumption for washing in Europe in kWh/kg.…”
