“…This percentage suggests that this is likely to be a significant factor in determining which cases will be seen by the liaison psychogeriatrician. The characteristics of this sample are comparable to samples in previous studies (Loane and Jefferys 1998), although the female bias was smaller than usual. The relative excess of females in the "Negative Behaviours" group was small and possibly artefactual.…”

“…The results, therefore, cannot be easily generalized to other units. However, the demographic and diagnostic characteristics, reasons for referral and management advice oered are similar to other published studies of referrals to liaison geriatric psychiatry services (Ford and Folks, 1985;Mainprize and Rodin, 1987;Wrigley and Leone, 1991;Leone and Jeerys, 1998). Despite the study duration of 30 months, seasonal variations in the geriatric medicine admission rates and referral rates were not controlled for in the analysis; the referral rate to the liaison geriatric psychiatry service may be in¯uenced by these variables.…”

“…For each referral, data on a number of variables (age, sex, diagnosis, previous psychiatric history, reasons for referral, recommended medical interventions and recommended social interventions) were ascertained from prospectively recorded case-records using a structured form. Reasons for referral, recommendations for medical management and recommendations for social management were clearly de®ned and categorized (Tables 1 and 2); these de®nitions and categories were developed from the existing literature (Benbow, 1987;Scott et al, 1988;Swanwick et al, 1994;Leone and Jeerys, 1998) and our clinical experience. The structured form was similar to that used in other studies (Redlinghuys and Shah, 1997;Odutoye and Shah, 1999) and is…”

“…This compares favourably with other reports. Loane & Jefferys (1998) reported outcomes at 3-month follow-up: 34% of assessed patients were in a care home. Mujic et al (2004) reported that 32% of their patients were discharged to a care home.…”
