In order to present him-or herself at the outset of psychotherapy as a credible client, the person needs to, on one hand, formulate a sense of lost agency in accounts of his/her life situation, and on the other, to present him-or herself as willing and able to take part in conversational selfexploration. In this study we looked in detail at how one person, seeking psychotherapy, constructed accounts that served this double function. We sought to develop the usefulness of the concept of agency as an integrative theoretical construct of core processes in therapy and introduced a model of five aspects of agentic vs. non-agentic presentation, developed and applied in an earlier study on clients in semi-mandatory counselling. The results show how those aspects -relationality, causal attribution, intentionality, historicity, and reflexivity -were present in, or lacking from, accounts given by this one client entering voluntary psychotherapy. We conclude that qualitative process research could benefit from considering loss of agency as one crucial object of psychotherapy and the ongoing discursive formulations and re-formulations of the client's more or less agentic positions as central to the process of therapy.

ABSTRACThe articles in this special issue are hugely varied in terms of their country of origin (Brazil, Finland, Italy, Malaysia and the UK); theoretical influences (e.g. Lacanian theory, cultural-historical approaches and relational theories) and method of qualitative analysis (e.g. content and thematic analyses, Lacanian discourse analysis, Grounded theory, ethnography and auto-ethnography). In this commentary, I will discuss each article in turn before moving on to address some common issues including: the relationship between therapeutic innovation and research; differing implicit models of subjectivity; the need for theoretically pluralistic approaches to interpretation; and the need to incorporate the views of service users.

In this study, we explore the etymology and history of "agency," link it with relational psychoanalytic literature, and examine how it can be understood within Lacanian psychoanalytic theory and practice. Building on its history, we find that "agency" embodies a binary distinction between the person as an actor, on the one hand, and as a being who is subject to determining structures, on the other. This binary approach, however, limits the debate concerning agency. Arendt's concept of "action," which builds on the same etymological stem as "agency" (i.e., "agere"), allows for nuance in the concept and moves it beyond its otherwise binary understanding. Through this conceptual work, we draw three conclusions regarding patient agency: (a) agency can only come about in relation to others; (b) initiating a new beginning in speech acts and actions already implies agency; and (c) one must be willing to take responsibility for the consequences of one's actions to be able to feel agentic. Lastly, we relate these three conclusions to Lacanian psychoanalysis, in particular to the notions of alienation and separation, full speech, and guilt.
