Construction of the Calendar Timescale for Lake Wigry (Ne Poland) Sediments on the Basis of Radiocarbon Dating

Abstract: ABSTRACT.A radiocarbon chronology of lake sediments deposited in Lake Wigry during the Last Glacial and Holocene periods provided the basis for calendar age-depth modeling. Various fractions (organics and carbonates) were dated and the results were subjected to critical analysis. The dates affected by reservoir effects as well as outlying data were excluded, and the non-linear age model was developed based on 13 ages. The statistical tools used for construction of the models include the Bayesian analysis, appl… Show more

“…Sandy muds with plant detritus and admixture of sand and gravel observed in the base of the profile are characteristic for the lake forming stage (Stasiak, 1971;Więckowski, 1988). Fine-grained carbonate deposits, mainly lacustrine chalk, typical for Słupiańska Bay , are connected with the Piotrowska et al (2007), Chronozones according Mangerud et al (1974) in interpretation of Kupryjanowicz (2007).…”

“…Interdisciplinary project elaborated by Professor Jacek Rutkowski contained numerous radiocarbon (Piotrowska and Hajdas, 2006;Piotrowska et al, 2007) and lead (Gąsiorowski and Hercman, unpublished) dating, pollen analysis (Kupryjanowicz, 2004a;2006a;2006b andPiotrowska, 2005), Cladocera analysis , diatom analysis and lithological and chemical analyses (Rutkowski et al, 2002a;2002b;2006a;2006b;Osadczuk et al, 2006) of examined profiles. It created an exceptional chance for modern detailed paleoecological reconstruction.…”

“…For the five samples from the bottom part of the core (depth 130-300cm) an attempt to construct continuous calendar age-depth model was undertaken, similar to the previously reported by De Vleeschouwer et al (2009) for peat deposit or Piotrowska et al (2007) for lake sediments. For this purpose the calibration of radiocarbon dates was performed including information of stratigraphic position of samples with the use of P_Sequence function in OxCal programme (Bronk Ramsey, 2008).…”
