Construction of Sodium Heat-Pipe Furnaces and the Isothermal Characteristics of the Furnaces

Abstract: Due to an excellent temperature flattening ability, annular sodium heat pipes operating from 500 • C to 1200 • C have been widely used as liners for isothermal furnaces to provide uniform and stable temperature zones. In order to develop the capabilities to fabricate liquid-metal heat pipes, an apparatus for fabricating sodium heat pipes was set up at the National Institute of Metrology (NIM), China. In this paper, the newly developed fabrication apparatus, the detailed procedures for manufacturing sodium heat… Show more

“…Unfortunately, this type of heat pipe is uncommon in the literature as well as in industrial applications [8,9,[11][12][13]. Yan et al [12] reported an excellent temperature flattening ability using annular sodium heat pipes operating from 500 to 1200 • C. Their experimental results showed that the largest temperature difference within 150 mm at the bottom of the thermometer is better than 15 mK in the aluminum point cell installed in the sodium heat pipe furnace, which was controlled to about 657 • C. Choi et al [13] investigated a concentric annular heat pipe with almost half area heating. Their work presents an isothermal, low-temperature (200-300 • C range) heat pipe furnace for a metallic nanoparticle sintering process.…”

“…For different conditions, the annular heat pipe can be heated at one side and cooled at the other side as the cylinder heat pipe to transfer a lot of heat [12][13], or heated at the outer pipe and cooled at the inner pipe to provide a uniform temperature zone [14][15][16]. The annular heat pipe is mainly used as a temperature stabilizing device to reduce the influence of the heating equipment on the stability of temperature distribution in the field of measurement [17][18]. Annular heat pipes are usually used with freezing points such as aluminium or silver freezing points.…”

“…Annular heat pipes are usually used with freezing points such as aluminium or silver freezing points. The heat source heated the outer wall of the outer pipe of annular heat pipe, the temperature of the freezing point can be maintained at the melting point in the inner pipe of annular heat pipe when the freezing point is in the solid-liquid mixing state [18].…”

“…We are planning to use an isothermal liner heat pipe outside the interrogation region to improve the temperature uniformity. Heat pipes are effective thermal control devices, have been widely applied in broad areas [15]. The performance of a mock up isothermal liner is tested, and the results show reduced temperature fluctuations and better temperature uniformity with this heat pipe.…”
