Construction of an Index for Predicting Suicide Attempts in Depressed Adolescents

Abstract: A group of 48 adolescents who recently attempted suicide and 66 depressed adolescents were compared on sociodemographic, behavioural, psychological and relational variables. The variables which proved significant were used in different combinations in stepwise logistic regression analyses, resulting in seven variables which served as the content of an index of risk. The sensitivity of the index was 90% and the specificity 83%. At one-year follow-up the occurrence of a suicide attempt correlated with score on t… Show more

“…Predictive scales have since been devised for depressed adolescents, 37 as well as adults. 38 ' 39 Recognising high-risk individuals would enable the clinicians to monitor them during subsequent follow-ups as well as mobilising his or her available resources in order to prevent the prediction of suicide from coming true.…”

“…In prospective studies, repeat attempt rates range from 12-14% at 1 year (White, 1974;Hawton et al, 1982;Kienhorst et al, 1991) and from 20-50% at 2-to 3-year follow-up (Stanley and Barter, 1970;McIntire et al, 1977;Cohen-Sandler et al, 1982). It seems likely that the rates in some of the longer studies may be underestimates, as patients become more difficult to locate during follow-up.…”

“…Among studies of patients who are re-contacted directly at follow-up, repeat attempt rates tend to be somewhat higher. Rates range from 10% within 3 months following the index attempt (Hawton et al, 1982;Spirito et al, 1992) to 12% at 1 year (White, 1974;Kienhorst et al, 1991).…”

“…Suicide is relatively rare in those under 16 years of age, although the numbers begin to rise sharply after the age of 14 years (Owens, 1990;Woodroffe et al, 1993). Hence, a growing body of work is addressed to this neglected area encompassing the epidemiology of DSH in young persons, risk factors and after-care (Brent, 1997;Harrington et al, 1998;Hawton & Fagg, 1992;Kerfoot et al, 1997;Kienhorst et al, 1991;Pearce & Martin, 1994;Rey & Bird, 1991). Particular concerns have been identi ed including the standard of assessment and care provided to younger persons presenting with DSH in English services.…”
