Construction of a new multi-turn time-of-flight mass spectrometer

Abstract: A new type of multi‐turn time‐of‐flight mass spectrometer was constructed, consisting of four cylindrical electric sectors and 28 electric quadrupole lenses, the size of the vacuum chamber being 60×70×20 cm. It was demonstrated that the mass resolution can be increased according to the number of cycles of the ions through the ion optical system. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

“…e doublet peaks observed at 1029.7, with a 0.03 u di erence, are enlarged. e third peak of (0, 17) and the monoisotopic ion peak of (4,14) can be seen to be clearly resolved owing to the high mass resolving power of 80,000 for this system. In contrast, no (4, 14) peak was e mass spectrum of the EO-PO block copolymer at m/z 1,027.2-1,033.2. e solid arrows indicate the isotopic pattern of (0, 17), and the dotted arrows indicate that of (4,14).…”

“…The proposed systems are listed as follows: Figure 1 shows the development history of multi-turn TOF mass spectrometers at Osaka University. We designed and constructed the first multi-turn TOF mass spectrometer "MULTUM Linear plus" as a laboratory model for cometary exploration (Matsuo et al, 1999;Toyoda et al, 2000;Toyoda et al, 2003). The system consists of four discrete units, each comprised of an electrostatic quadrupole lens, a cylindrical electrostatic sector and an electrostatic quadrupole lens.…”

“…Recently, several new multi-turn TOF mass spectrometers have been constructed in Japan. Sakurai et al designed and constructed a fairly large multi-turn TOF mass spectrometer referred to as "OVAL" [10] comprising six electrostatic analyzers that produced an elliptical orbit of 7.4 m. Almost simultaneously, a compact multi-turn TOF mass spectrometer referred to as "MULTUM linear plus" [11] was developed at the Osaka University. It consisted of four cylindrical electrostatic sectors and 16 electrostatic quadrupole lenses.…”
