Construction of a Core Collection of Germplasms from Chinese Fir Seed Orchards

Abstract: Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook) is one of the most important tree species for afforestation in China. First-, second-, and third-generation seed orchards of Chinese fir have been established successively, and rich germplasms have been accumulated in the process of genetic improvement. It is necessary to build a core collection of germplasms from Chinese fir seed orchards. In this work, we constructed core collections representing the genetic diversity of Chinese fir seed orchard resources ba… Show more

“…Kumar et al reported that six independent core libraries (CC1-CC6) were created by POWERCORE and MSTRAT using molecular marker and phenotypic data from two seasons in safflower [7]. Here, 50 pairs of InDel markers were combined with 11 oil traits to construct the core germplasm library of 214 safflower germplasm using Core Hunter 3, the advantage of that in developing smaller core sets has been demonstrated previously in plants such as Indian mustard and Chinese fir [31][32][33]. The results revealed that all six genetic diversity parameters of the core germplasm were higher than the original germplasm at the molecular level.…”

“…However, geneticists focus on the equal or acceptable contribution of individual plants to gene pool, which can produce a genetically high-quality seed crop [4][5][6]. High variations in the contribution also could help to achieve a balance using theoretical and practical tools [7][8][9], while large fertility variations were reported in different populations and years in 99 stands and 36 seed orchards of different forest tree species [10][11][12], and in Pinus brutia [13] and Cedrus libani [14].…”
