This paper provides a critical review of the related literature on 3D printing in construction. The paper discusses and evaluates the different 3D printing techniques in construction. The paper also discusses and categorizes the benefits, challenges, and risks of 3D printing in construction. The use of 3D printing technology offers several advantages over traditional methods. However, it comes with its own additional challenges and risks. The main benefits of 3D printing in construction include constructability and sustainability benefits. The challenges are categorized into seven groups. The main challenges, found through the literature, are material related. The most cited challenges are material printability, buildability, and open time. Additionally, scalability, structural integrity, and lack of codes and regulations are frequently cited as major challenges. The additional risks are categorized into seven groups: 3D printing material, 3D printing equipment, construction site, and environment, management, stakeholders, regulatory and economic, and cybersecurity risks. The paper fills a gap in the literature as it addresses a new aspect of 3D printing, which is risk. The paper also provides some insights, recommendations, and future research ideas.

This article is written for the launch of the specialty section on construction management at the Frontiers in Built Environment. This new specialty section opens an on-line platform for academics and practitioners in the subject field to share valuable experiences and findings from innovative research and development as well as practices, which focus on the management of people/workforce, product/production, and processes across built environment project stages, including development and construction, operation and maintenance, as well as demolition and redevelopment, under considerations on the dependability and productivity of construction management services. In this article, the writer presents his humble opinions limited from experiences from academic research and professional services around the world in the past three decades. The topics derived on grand challenges in construction management are gigantic in terms of their coverages, but may have huge impacts on professional development in both short and longer term. Discussions presented here on grand challenges in construction management consist of four parts to respectively focus on an initial cognitive framework of the construction management body of knowledge (CMBOK), intelligence pervasive construction management systems, interdisciplinary digital innovation, and solutions for performance enhancement in megaproject delivery. The research methodology that support the writer to describe the four grand challenges includes literature review, comparison study, site observation, and system architecture analysis and development. It was the writer's initial abductive reasoning to identify the four grand challenges in construction management through an extensive literature review, which was based on national and regional strategies for the construction industry from the world top economies. Some key references relating to these four major topics are collected to support discussions in this article. It is expected that this article could contribute to the debate as well as research and development in construction management in terms of continuous technical enhancements on project-oriented performance and value regardless the scope, the location, and the time associated and concerned. As the study was conducted through abductive reasoning, this article should have its limitation on the coverage to all grand challenges in construction management, and this should leave many unanswered questions for further exploratory research.

The construction industry is ripe for disruption. With the vast pace of new technologies innovating the whole life cycle of construction, the revolution seems vital. The ideas of digitization and digitalization in Industrial Revolution 4.0 are currently entering the market in most industries including the construction industry. While most other industries have undergone tremendous changes recently, the construction industry has been reluctant about plenarily embracing the newly emerging technological adoption. Varying sophistication of construction, this paper was empirically evaluating large construction firms' point of view on challenges of the construction industry in the era of Revolution 4.0 using survey data form. The findings reveal that construction companies need to deal with the manifold PESTEL (political, economic, social, technological, environmental, and legal) challenges. By adopting the Revolution 4.0 hindered by lack of policies, financial problem, limited demand for innovation among large economic players, lack of trust towards foreign partners, and limited adaptability of foreign software. Clearly, this paper helps scholars and industry players to redefine the development of the construction industry into detailed strategic plans or policies in the future. In a nutshell, transforming the construction industry into digitization and digitalization might confront few challenges but the longterm benefits obtained throughout application should not be forgotten.
