Construction and Validation of the 21 Item Fitness-to-Drive Screening Measure Short-Form

Abstract: Introduction: The Fitness-to-Drive Screening Measure is a free online screening tool that detects at-risk older drivers, however, it's 20 min administration time may render the 54-item tool less than optimal for clinical use. Thus, this study constructed and validated a 21-item FTDS Short-Form (FTDS-SF).Method: This mixed methods study used 200 proxy rater responses and older driver on-road assessments. We conducted a Rasch analysis to examine information at the level of the item and used content validity inde… Show more

“…To bridge this gap between the self-reported and actual observed behavior, proxy reports (i.e., using an external rater to assess a specific issue that needs to be addressed from a non-self-reported approach) are used in many fields such as healthcare [25][26][27] and social functioning [28]. In road safety research, proxies have been used to assess driving behaviors among older adults [18,[29][30][31], fitness to drive in stroke patients [32], or to compare the risk perception between drivers and other road users [23]. The term proxy report refers to the use of an external rater when a different perspective is needed for a full understanding of a particular construct, among other reasons [28], and thus both terms (external rater and proxy) will be interchangeably used throughout this paper.…”
