Construction and validation of a children's interpersonal trust belief scale

Abstract: A scale was constructed to assess children's generalized trust beliefs (CGTB) in four target groups (mother, father, teacher and peer) with respect to three bases of trust: reliability, emotionality, and honesty. The CGTB Scale was administered to 145 Year 5 and 156 Year 6 children (mean age = 10 years, 1 month) residing in the English Midlands, United Kingdom. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses yielded evidence for the expected factor structure of the CGTB Scale. The total CGTB Scale and subscales d… Show more

“…The CGTB has been found to show construct validity by factor analyses and correlations with other comparable measures of trust beliefs (Rotenberg et al, 2005). The scale has been found to show construct validity by factor analyses and correlations with other comparable measures of trust beliefs (Rotenberg et al, 2005). Higher scores denote greater trust beliefs.…”

“…After completing Token Quest, participants were given a brief description of interpersonal trustworthiness that focused on three key elements: honesty, reliability and emotional trust (Rotenberg, 1994;Rotenberg et al, 2005). They then rated the trustworthiness of characters in six brief behavioural vignettes (3 trustworthy, 3 untrustworthy) to confirm that they understood the concept.…”

“…Research has shown that the more individual prosocial behaviors one commits, the higher one's subjective well-being, self-efficacy, and self-esteem are (Laihle et al, 2004;Hu et al, 2011), and the better one's positive mood (Yang, 2015) and sense of interpersonal trust are (Rotenberg et al, 2005). In addition, prosocial behavior has been found to be conducive to interpersonal harmony.…”
