“…What psychoanalysis certainly has to exhibit are its scienti c credentials, and to this end the criticism of the epistemologists of the fties has been most decidedly salutary. The basic point is that in its search for a scienti c statute, psychoanalysis should compare itself with an epistemology which is contemporary and not scientist or correspondentist, modes which have antiquarian rather than current value (24). The quarrel between human sciences and natural sciences is not completely exhausted, however: the nineteenth century dispute between historicism and positivism ared up again in the contretemps of the over neopositivism and phenomenologica l hermeneutics in the twentieth century, and it is being in part played out in the analytic versus socalled "continental" philosophers contest (25).…”
