Construction and Operation of a Respiration Chamber of the Head-Box Type for Methane Measurement from Cattle

Abstract: This paper aims to describe the construction and operation of a respiration chamber of the head-box type for methane (CH4) measurements in bovines. The system consists of (1) a head box with a stainless steel frame and acrylic walls, floor, and ceiling; (2) a stainless steel feeder; (3) an automatic drinking water bowl; (4) a hood made from reinforced canvas; (5) an infrared (IR) CH4 gas analyzer, a mass flow generator, a data-acquisition system; and (6) a steel metabolic box. Six assays were conducted to dete… Show more

“…There was good agreement between the CH 4 production values of individual finishing beef cattle measured by a hood system and their subsequent daily CH 4 outputs by RC [ 74 ]. The mean CH 4 yield in dairy cows obtained in a head box type system was also in line with those reported in RC but with a 70% lower cost in construction [ 20 ].…”

“…A ventilated hood or respiration head box is designed as a simplified RC using similar principles in gas measurement which covers only the animal’s head instead of its whole body [ 20 , 21 ]. The ventilated hood provides enough space for the movement of the animal’s head and free access to feed and water.…”

“…Despite the numerous studies related to CH 4 emissions, the methodology of determining CH 4 emissions from individual animals is very diverse. Methods could be classifi ed into long-term, intended for measuring CH 4 emissions during a 24-hours period, and short-term methods, based on measurements of enteric CH 4 emissions in exhaled or eructated gas in short (minute) intervals over a few consecutive days [3,[11][12][13][14][15]. The respiration chamber as a long-term method of measuring CH 4 emissions is used as the "gold standard".…”

“…Respiration chambers are the most known and well-established proposed gas emission measurement methods (Place et al 2011, Castelán Ortega et al 2020. A respiration chamber encloses an animal's pen for multiple days such that the animal's emitted gasses are measured by highly sensitive gas sensors that are able detect a number of gases within a controlled ventilated airstream.…”
