Urbanization and related construction activities generate massive construction and demolition (C&D) waste, which poses considerable risks to the environment and human health. However, it is difficult to assess the significance of these issues without a quantitative understanding of spatial patterns of C&D waste generation (source), transportation (flow), and treatment (sink). This paper maps source, sinks, and flows of C&D waste by coupling a geographic information system and material flow analysis. The methodology is new in the field of C&D waste quantification at the city level, especially downscaling to 5 km × 5 km grids. The results showed that a total of 37.72 million metric tonnes (Mt) of C&D wastes were generated in Beijing, 2019, and ~72% of them were reused and recycled. In space, C&D waste generation in suburban and rural districts (28.73 Mt) was over three times more than that in the downtown area (8.99 Mt). However, the downtown area was the net source region and transported massive amounts of C&D waste to suburban and rural districts. In comparison, several suburban and rural districts had self-sufficient treatment capacity. Our study highlights that a series of C&D waste maps on multiple spatial scales are of great help to design effective policies for waste management by providing spatial details of magnitude and components, and explicitly recognizing primary source and sink areas in cities.

Urbanization and population growth have contributed to a tripling of building material consumption from 2000 to 2017. Building materials have a range of environmental impacts throughout their life cycle, from extraction, processing, and transport of raw materials to building construction, use, and eventual demolition and waste. Mitigation measures that target specific materials or value chain stages may therefore have incremental or even adverse net environmental effects. In this perspective, we develop a framework for applying life cycle thinking to identify key impacts and corresponding mitigation approaches, inform building design and material selection, and ensure effective treatment and recycling of construction and demolition wastes. Life cycle evaluation can also be used to assess and avoid environmental trade-offs among life cycle stages. Challenges for implementing these life cycle principles include collecting and integrating inventory data for products, managing multiple stakeholders within the construction industry, and monitoring end-of-life impacts; measures for overcoming such challenges are discussed.

The building industry is responsible for a large amount of waste, and the measurement and modelling of this waste could be used to develop better waste management plans. Several theoretical models explain the relationships between waste and building characteristics, but local practices may result in different behaviours. This study aimed to measure and analyse the waste generated through construction. It was based on the analysis of 18 building sites located in the region of Porto Alegre, Brazil. Waste was measured at these sites, and the results showed an average waste generation rate of 0.151 m3 m-2. A regression analysis of the collected data presented a satisfactory performance in two models. The first model was developed to explain total waste generation, including the effects of certain attributes, with an R2 = 0.81. The changes in waste generated during construction were estimated. The second model considered time schedules and examined the effect of the construction stage on waste generation, and reached an R2 = 0.91. The model with time indicated an S-shaped relationship. The models presented satisfactory statistical parameters and could be used to produce better waste management plans in the preconstruction stage.
