Construction and characterization of poly(amide-ester-imide) nanocomposites containing N-trimellitylimido-l-leucine toughened with a combination of bioactive surface-grafted TiO2

This work aims to investigate the structure-property relationship in ternary nanocomposites containing of amorphous poly(vinylpyrrolidone) as the matrix, organo-modified-TiO 2 nanoparticles and organo-modified-montmorillonite as the nanofillers. In this regard, poly(vinylpyrrolidone)/organo-modified-TiO 2 / organo-modified-montmorillonite nanocomposites were prepared by sonication process with 10 wt% of organomodified-TiO 2 and different loadings (3, 5 and 7 wt%) of organo-modified-montmorillonite. Nanostructure characterization and dispersion capacity of nanofillers in the polymer matrix were investigated by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy. According to these data, the nanostructure of ternary nanocomposites was predominantly intercalated. Also, incorporation of the organoclay and TiO 2 nanoparticles into the poly(vinylpyrrolidone) system was observed to have an obvious effect on the shape and size of polymer matrix. According to thermogravimetric analysis data, the presence of organo-modified-montmorillonite and organo-modifiedTiO 2 in the poly(vinylpyrrolidone) matrix, caused an improved in the thermal stability of the obtained poly(vinylpyrrolidone) nanocomposites.

At first, a chiral PAEI was obtained by step-growth polymerization of diol, N, N'-(1,3,5,7-tetraoxo-5,7-dihydropyrrolo[3,4-f]isoindole-2,6(1H,3H)-diyl)bis(4-hydroxybenzamide) with N-trimellitylimido-L-leucine. The blending of nanoclays with PAEI modifies the thermal property, and this change is strongly related to the dispersion of nanoclay in the polymer matrix. For this goal, positively charged chiral L-leucine was incorporated into the unmodified Cloisite-Na þ montmorillonite (MMT) for organomodification of MMT by cation-exchang method. Then PAEI/OMMT nanocomposites with different compositions were synthesized by solution intercalation method.

The progress of organic/inorganic composite materials has been specifically trendy in the last decade. This article focused on the fabrication and characterization of nanocomposites (NCs) with two different nanoparticles. Poly(amide-ester-imide) (PAEI) matrix was prepared by reacting N,N 0 -(1,3,5,7-tetraoxo-5,7-dihydropyrrolo[3,4-f]isoindole-2,6(1H,3H)-diyl)-bis(4-hydroxybenz-amide) with N-trimellitylimido-L-leucine (TML) via tosyl chloride, pyridine, and N,N-dimethylformamide as a condensing agent. The surface of titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles was modified with diacid TML. Diacid-grafted TiO 2 (D-TiO 2 ) was mixed with the obtained PAEI and sonicated to form a PAEI/D-TiO 2 NC. Then, the surface of a sodium montmorillonite (MMT) was modified through intercalation with the cationic surfactant of L-leucine using an ion-exchange mechanism. PAEI/D-TiO 2 /organically modified montmorillonite composites at three different weight fractions of silicate layer were prepared via solution intercalation method. The spectral, morphological, and thermal properties of the aforementioned NCs were investigated in terms of several experimental techniques, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The obtained novel NCs improved thermal stability from neat polymer. Photographs showing TEM and FESEM results also illustrated that the nanofillers were rather uniformly distributed in the polymer matrix.
