Construction and application of a portable microcontrolled turbidimeter for the in situ determination of sulfate

Abstract: This study reports on the construction of a turbidimeter employing light emitting diodes as radiation source at a wavelength of 405 nm, a photodiode as detector, a temperature sensor and a microcontroller used for data acquisition and processing. The turbidimeter was applied to determine sulfate concentrations in natural water employing barium chloride as reagent. Potential interferences and recovery studies were performed and an interference of 3.5 % and a recovery between 97.8 and 108 % were estimated. The a… Show more

“…In water bodies, for example, light penetration is reduced due to turbidity, also reducing the process of photosynthesis [ 9 ]. In the case of drinkable water, the turbidity desirable value is of up to 5 nefelometric unities, and up to 40 unities for river and lakes water [ 10 ]. Water in its pure state has the capability of solubilizing substances, particularly salts, thus causing some natural waters to having great values of electric conductivity.…”

“…This device is able to perform commands and instructions, which are driven by a code that can be loaded and storage into the memory of the microcontroller. In analytical chemistry, microcontrollers have been used for the construction of photometers, [4] spectrophotometers, [5] fluorimeters, [6] turbidimeters, [7,8] nephelometers, [8,9] potentiostats and luminometers [10]. In order to reach a full and more versatility automation, the microcontrolled instrumentation can be coupled to flow analyses procedures.…”
