Gender‐Role Attitudes Among Immigrant Latinas: Empowering Women

In general Latinos hold more conservative attitudes regarding gender roles when compared to Whites. However, Latinos born in the United States with higher education are more likely to have egalitarian gender role attitudes compared to Latino immigrants. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between gender role attitudes and acculturation, marianismo, and relationship control, among Latina immigrants living in the United States. A hierarchical regression and correlation analysis were used to measure the outcome of this study. A total of 234 women were included in the study with a mean age of 34 years old. The education level was less than high school (53 percent), with the majority employed (54 percent). The average time living in the United States was 8 years (SD = 2.0). Acculturation, marianismo, and relationship control were significantly associated with gender‐role, R2 = .207, F (3, 95) = 11.3, p = 0.001. The correlation analysis showed an inverse relationship between egalitarian attitudes and marianismo (r = −.304, p < .0005) and a positive relationship with acculturation (r = .295, p < .0005). Egalitarian gender role attitudes were observed with an inverse bidirectional relationship between marianismo and acculturation among Latino immigrant women living in the United States.

As public awareness of and concern about sexual victimization has increased in recent decades, stigmatization of sex offenders has also increased considerably. Contemporary sex offender policies transform discrete criminal behaviors into lifelong social identities. Although there is much debate about the efficacy and constitutionality of such policies, we know little about how the category of “sex offender” is constituted in the first place. In this article, I reveal how prosecutors and defense attorneys construct sex offenders, not as monsterous or racialized as is commonly thought, but as “lower class” men. This analysis is based on 30 in‐depth interviews with prosecutors and defense attorneys in Michigan. These legal actors wield disproportionate power in defining the boundaries of criminal behaviors and individuals. That they associate sexual criminality with lower class men demonstrates yet another way that class‐based inequalities are reproduced in the legal field.

This article offers a feminist literary analysis of the gendered embodiment of shame in Pompidou posse by Sarah Lotz. In this novel, Lotz depicts female characters who are sexually assaulted by acquaintances and the resultant shame and trauma reside in their bodies. I will demonstrate that the embodied shame of these characters is distinctly gendered and that this shapes their attempts to cope with the aftermath of the sexual assaults. A close reading of the text reveals that the characters are exposed to overwhelming social messages of female culpability in a larger context that is rife with misogyny. As a result, they anticipate blame to such an extent that they blame themselves and internalise this blame as shame. By focusing on the bodies of the survivors, Lotz demonstrates the embodiment of shame, but she also suggests a corporeal challenge to silencing. The bodies of these characters speak loudly, albeit sometimes in the halting language of trauma, and they function to alert them to danger, to help them excavate memories that are made inaccessible and to testify to traumatic sexual assault.
