Tri‐Functional Double Perovskite Oxide Catalysts for Fuel Cells and Electrolyzers

Perovskite oxides are at the forefront of the race to develop catalysts/electrodes for fuel cells and electrolyzers. This work presents trifunctional properties of the double‐perovskite oxide PrBa0.5Sr0.5Co1.5Fe0.5O5+δ and the PrBa0.5Sr0.5Co1.5Fe0.5O5+δ−Ag composite prepared by the glycine nitrate process. The electrocatalytic studies reveal that the Ag‐based composite is an excellent catalyst for both oxygen evolution (OER) and hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) in alkaline solution. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis through distribution function of relaxation times (DFRT) suggests that the improved activity originates from the suppression of resistance contributed by various relaxation processes. The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics in these oxide‐based cathodes has been studied by performing symmetric‐cell measurements at high temperatures using both oxygen‐ion and proton‐conducting cells. DC bias dependence of charge‐transfer processes, oxygen‐surface kinetics, polarization resistances, and activation energies are revealed by DFRT studies. Ag addition in PrBa0.5Sr0.5Co1.5Fe0.5O5+δ leads to enhanced kinetics of OER, HER, and ORR.

The synergistic effects of multiple components and unique nanostructures were contributed to prepare the high‐performance battery‐type electrode materials. In this work, Mo element was introduced to form the ternary transition metal oxides/hydroxides of Ni‐Co to improve conductivity, and then charge transfer was accelerated to enhance the capacity storage. After sulfidation, the electrical conductivity was further improved, and a porous flower‐like nanostructure was formed. Except for that, the composites of transition metal oxides/hydroxides and sulfides were formed via sulfidation. With the help of the synergistic effects of multiple components and a porous flower‐like nanostructure, more Faradic redox reactions occurred. Therefore, the as‐prepared porous flower‐like Ni‐Co‐Mo‐S nanostructures on Ni foam exhibited an excellent areal capacitance of 7.22 C·cm−2 at 5 mA·cm−2 and long‐cycle stability (96.9% retention after 5000 cycles). Furthermore, a coin‐type battery‐supercapacitor hybrid (BSH) device was assembled, which achieved 54.54 Wh·kg−1 at 540 W·kg−1 and displayed 74.8% capacitance retention after 3500 cycles. All mentioned above demonstrated that ternary transition metal oxides/hydroxides precursors via sulfidation can form special structures and the composites of transition metal oxides/hydroxides and sulfides to prepare high‐performance battery‐type electrodes for energy storage.

The most important issue in water splitting is the development of efficient, abundant, and cost-effective hydrogen and oxygen evolution catalysts. The development of an efficient electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under alkaline conditions is described here following a simple hydrothermal route. Here, a method for the synthesis of NiCo S /Co S , Co S , and NiCo S nanotubes has been developed. The NiCo S /Co S heterostructure has been introduced as an efficient electrocatalyst towards HER under alkaline conditions (1.0 m KOH). The vertically aligned nanotube heterostructure (NiCo S /Co S ) shows the most efficient activity as compared to bare Co S and NiCo S nanotubes. The heterostructure of NiCo S and Co S shows a significant anodic shift in the onset potential compared to the bare counterpart. NiCo S /Co S can generate a current density of 10 mA cm upon application of only -0.172 V vs. RHE, whereas Co S and NiCo S require -0.293 V and -0.239 V vs. RHE, respectively. The heterostructure formation and the nanotube morphology of Co S and NiCo S facilitates a fast charge transportation which results in higher electrocatalytic activity. The hydrogen gas evolution rate of the NiCo S /Co S heterostructure was determined to be 2.29 μmol min .
