Constructing a Mixed Methods Research Design: Exploration of an Architectural Intervention

Abstract: The aim of this methodological description is to illustrate the application of mixed methods research in architectural design using a hybrid model consisting of a taxonomy development model and an embedded quasi-experimental model. The research employed qualitative and quantitative methods to explore the design of an architectural intervention and determine its effectiveness in improving environmental knowledge, attitudes, and behavior among primary school students. It also outlined strategies adopted to overc… Show more

“…Many researchers found visual tools such as figures, matrices, joint display, and tables could significantly facilitate data collection, data mixing, and even obtaining of funding (Bustamante, 2019; Corden & Hirst, 2008; Kong et al, 2018). For instance, Robinson et al (2011) composed a matrix to visually manage every data collection.…”

“…The research model was a mixed-methods experimental design because the study used both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. In the mixed-methods experimental design, qualitative data is collected to support experimental study results to understand whether the intervention works and how it works (Creswell & Plano Clark, 2018;Kong, Mohd Yaacob, & Mohd Ariffin, 2018). The nonequivalent groups pretest-posttest design was used to collect the quantitative data for the analysis in the experimental strand (Büyüköztürk, Çakmak, Akgün, Karadeniz, & Demirel, 2014;Fraenkel & Wallen, 2012).…”

“…As advocated by several researchers [57][58][59][60], a mixed methodology was used to gather data. This is outlined in Table 1, which specifies the actions taken and research tools utilised in this study.…”
