Constructed Socio-Economic Exclusion

Abstract

This chapter highlights gender inequalities that hamper women’s realization of their potential in small-scale fisheries in Malawi. The study uses in-depth analysis of drivers of inequalities and regulatory frameworks in the context of constraints and barriers women face in fish farming based on information from literature on the determinant factors that contribute to marginalization of women. It finds that women have less recourse to legal recognition and protection, lower access to public knowledge and information, and less decision-making power. It notes that law alone cannot guarantee gender equality, hence the need to adopt inclusive and equitable approaches that harness consciousness-raising to enhance women’s participation in small-scale fisheries value chains.
