Construct Validity of the Divergent Production Subtests from the Structure-of-Intellect Learning Abilities Test

Abstract: The Structure of Intellect Learning Abilities (SOI-LA) test has been widely recommended for use in placement, diagnostic, and prescriptive applications. However, the validity of the test has not been fully explored. This study investigated the construct validity of the three divergent production subtests on the SOI-LA test. Subjects were 205 sixth-grade pupils from New York and Louisiana schools. The evidence generally supported the validity of the three subtests, although results were somewhat mixed with resp… Show more

“…Surely gifted programs see creativity in art, writing, and math as important factors that go beyond the more convergent abilities. This unique contribution of the SOI-LA (which Thompson and Andersson, 1983, showed had interrater reliabilities of .91 to .95 for the DFU, DMU, and DSR subtests), was not mentioned by Clarizio and Mehrens.…”

“…These subtests measure the production of relations, units or transformations with symbolic, figural or semantic elements. The application of factor analytic techniques to Guilford's Structure of the Intellect model has provided evidence of acceptable construct validity in the SOl ELCT (Meeker, 1969;Thompson & Anderson, 1983;Zegas, 1976). A list of the subtests used in this study can be found in the appendix.…”
