Construct Validation of the St. Marys CVA Evaluation: Perceptual Measures

Abstract: This study was conducted to continue the construct validation of the occupational therapy Cerebral Vascular Accident (CVA) evaluation used at St. Marys Hospital Medical Center in Madison, Wisconsin. From the previous factor analysis of this battery, a perception factor emerged that is defined by high loadings on measures of body scheme, figure ground, position in space, spatial relations, and stereognosis. From the literature review it was hypothesized that scores on these tests should be related to patient di… Show more

“…To further verify the construct validity of the St Marys CVA eval uation, hypotheses relevant to test performances must be examined. Harlowe and Van Deusen (1984) supported the hypothesis that scores on the perceptual tests would be related to the disposition of the patient at discharge. The present study examined the hypothesis that the Brunnstrom arm and hand recovery stage ratings in the CVA evaluation would be significantly related to scores on the Schenkenberg Line Bisection Test of unilateral neglect (Schenkenberg, Bradford, & Ajax, 1980).…”

“…Special task forces of the American Occupational Therapy Association are investigating the instruments used in specialty areas of occupational therapy (Bowker, 1983). Currently, many measurement tools are being developed for use in occupational therapy to describe the needs of patients, predict their potential for recovery and evaluate treatment effect (Erhardt, 1982;Harlowe & Van Deusen, 1984;Hemphill, 1982;Klein & Bell, 1982;Wilson, Baker & Graddock, 1984).…”

“…O ccupational therapists have, over the past few years, become more aware of the need to use standardized assessments in their clinical practice. The emphasis in the occupational therapy literature has been on identifying the preferred measurement properties of these instruments (Hasselkus & Safrit, 1976;Jette, 1980;Keith, 1984;Law, 1987) and describing the development of individual measures (Harlowe & Van Deusen, 1984;Mathiowetz, Volland, Kashman, & Weber, 1985;Wilson, Baker, & Craddock, 1984). Few comprehensive texts describe and summarize the measurement properties of assessment instruments for certain areas of practice.…”
