Construct Validation of the Greek SF-36 Health Survey

Abstract: These results confirm the multidimensional structure of the SF-36 and underscore the feasibility of multinational comparisons of health status using this instrument. They also support the use of eight subscale scores in parallel with three second-order summary scores rather than one overall score.

“…The eight dimensions can be summarized in two summary scores of physical and mental health 26 with higher scores (0-100 range) reflecting better-perceived health. In previous studies in Greece 27,28 , the SF-36 was validated and the results were comparable to those from studies in other European countries and the USA. In order to explore the relationship between socioeconomic status and health, we investigated graded associations between education, total monthly household income (after taxes) and health.…”

“…This questionnaire is thought to be able to estimate, with good precision, physical and mental health related to quality of life and has been substantially validated in a number of studies including studies conducted for the Greek population Anagnostopoulos et al 2005) that were comparable to the results from studies conducted in Europe and the USA. The SF-36 questionnaire is a generic tool that involves eight scales such as physical functioning (PF), role limitations due to physical health problems (RP), bodily pain (BP), general health (GH), vitality (VT), social functioning (SF), role limitations due to emotional problems (RE) and mental health (MH) and two summary scores: physical health (PCS) and mental health (MCS).…”

“…The scoring model is based on the standard gamble (SG) utilities of 836 members of the UK general population and, like the EQ-5D, regression models were used to predict utility scores from 0.3 (worst health) to 1.0 (full health) for each of the possible health states [16]. The SF-6D is derived from the SF-36, which has been translated into Greek, and its reliability and validity were established in a sample of 1,007 adults living in the greater Athens area [17,18]. Greek studies having used the SF-6D have demonstrated it to be satisfactorily valid [19,20].…”
