Estuaries are the main entry areas of mercury to the marine environment and are important to understand the effect of this contaminant on marine organisms, since it accumulates in the sediments becoming available to enter the food trophic chain. This study aims to determine the environmental variables that mainly influence the spatiotemporal dynamics of total mercury accumulation in sediments of tropical estuaries. Sediment samples were collected from interior and exterior areas of the estuary during the dry and rainy seasons, representing the spatiotemporal gradients of the estuary. The grain size, organic matter content (OM), and total mercury concentration (THg) of the sediment samples were determined. In addition, salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and pH of the water column associated with each sediment sample were assessed. The variations in environmental conditions, OM and THg in sediment were in accordance with a gradient which goes from conditions influenced by fresh water in the inner estuary to conditions influenced by sea water in the outer part of the estuary. The OM and THg in sediments presented similar variation patterns; they were higher in the rainy season than in the dry season and in the interior area of the estuary than in the exterior area. Despite the complex dynamic observed in the distribution and accumulation processes of mercury in sediments, these processes could be modeled from OM and salinity parameters. Due to the correlations found, in the process of accumulation of mercury in sediments the OM could represents the pathway of transport and accumulation of THg, and salinity could represent the influence of the hydroclimatic variations and environmental gradients of the estuary.

Trabajo presentado en modalidad de póster en el XV Seminario Nacional de Ciencias y Tecnologías del Mar. Cartagena, septiembre 16 al 20 del 2013. RESUMENSe realizó el análisis de la distribución espacial y temporal del transporte y bombeo de Ekman en la cuenca Caribe colombiana con datos de viento del sensor SeaWinds, entre noviembre de 1999 y noviembre de 2009. Los resultados indicaron promedio fue positivo cerca a las costas de Colombia mientras que en el norte de la cuenca se observó hundimiento de agua. La dirección dominante del transporte de Ekman fue hacia el norte y noroeste, registrando una magnitud máxima relativa en el oriente de la cuenca.PALABRAS CLAVE: transporte de Ekman, bombeo de Ekman, SeaWinds, Caribe colombiano, surgencia. ABSTRACTIn this paper, the space-time distribution of the Ekman transport and pumping in the Colombian Caribbean Basin was analyzed with wind data from the SeaWinds sensor between November 1999 and November 2009. The results indicated was positive near the Colombian coast while water sinking was observed in the northern section of the basin. Regarding Ekman transport, its dominant direction was towards the north and northwest, and its maximum relative magnitude was registered on the eastern side of the basin.

Relación entre parámetros océano-atmosféricos y la producción del café verde en ColombiaRelationship between ocean-atmospheric parameters and green coffee production in Colombia RESUMENSe determina la influencia de la migración de la zona de convergencia intertropical (ZCIT) y de El Niño oscilación del sur (ENOS) en la producción de café verde en Colombia durante el periodo de 1960 a 2007. Se dan a conocer las relaciones temporales entre la serie de producción de café verde (en grano y sin tostar) y las series que representan a los dos fenómenos de interacción océano-atmósfera. Para analizar la presencia de la oscilación de la ZCIT se utilizaron series de precipitación, la componente meridional del viento, la temperatura superficial del mar (TSM), la humedad relativa, la presión atmosférica y la temperatura del aire del puerto Buenaventura siendo el sector de Colombia donde se percibe su influencia. Los datos utilizados para el estudio de ENOS son las anomalías de TSM de las regiones Niño 1+2, Niño 3.4 y el índice oscilación del sur. Se concluye que la producción de café verde en Colombia está más influenciada por la migración de la ZCIT que por el ENOS. ABSTRACTThe influence of the migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in the production of green coffee in Colombia (1960Colombia ( -2007 was determined. Temporal relationships between the production series of green coffee (unroasted beans) and the series representing the two phenomena of the ocean-atmosphere interaction were uncovered. To analyze the presence of the oscillation of the ITCZ, the following were used: precipitation series, the meridional component of wind, sea surface temperature (SST), relative humidity, atmospheric pressure and air temperature of the port of Buenaventura; the most influenced sector in Colombia. The data used for the study of the ENSO included the SST anomalies of the regions: Niño 1+2, Niño 3.4, and the Southern Oscillation Index. We conclude that green coffee production in Colombia is more influenced by the migration of the ITCZ than the ENSO.
