The study estimated the yield and profitability of cotton production in northern Nigeria. Primary data were used for the study using a well-structured questionnaire and experimental plots. Data were collected on the cost of inputs, price and quantity of output as well as constraints facing the enterprise. Crop cut experiment was used to estimate the yield per hectare during a given cultivation cycle. The budgetary technique was used to estimate cost and returns to cotton production and Likert scale was used to identify and rank the constraints facing the enterprise. Random Sampling was employed to select eleven cotton farmers from Anka, Maru and Talata-mafara Local Government Areas to have a sum of thirty-three respondents from which one respondent from each of the three local governments volunteered to host the experimental plot for the crop cut. These selections were done based on their prominence in cotton production. The average estimated quantity of the three plots located in the three local government gives an estimated value of 1183 kg/ha. The study showed that cotton production is profitable with a gross margin of ₦40 while the profit index and benefit-cost ratio were 0.12 and 1.13 respectively. Major constraints facing the production of cotton were insufficient funding, poor/unstable pricing, high cost of inputs, policy summersault, poor linkage with off-takers and pest and diseases. This study recommends that governments at all levels should provide loans with no or very low interest for the farmers to solve the problem of funds and put in place policy measures aimed at regulating the price of cotton to establish a good marketing system. There is a need for research institutes to develop more high yielding cotton seeds for cotton farmers to increase yield for more profit. Cotton farmers need to be introduced to new techniques and innovations for maximum output, hence a need for more extension services. Keywords: Cotton production, crop cut experiment, profitability.

The study examined at local level the role of cotton and textile industrial linkage in employment opportunities in the cotton value added chain in Funtua region of Katsina State. An interview and direct observation method of data collection methods were typically undertaken to learn about the cotton and industrial processes and how they give rise to their respective products and by-products. Seven (7) agro-based industries were identified and visited in their various locations in the study area were purposively selected. The study investigated the forward and backward linkages processes that the five (5) active cotton and textile industry agreed to. Results indicated that few cotton and textile industry had folded up but majority of them are operating at low capacity most especially Funtua textile Limited that is currently hit with high cost of production, poor raw material supply, erratic power supply and lack of government support. The study identified the existence of weakness in backward linkage of agriculture in the developing economy of the study area. Finally, the conclusion offers suggestions that the weakness in the backward linkage can be alleviated when local farmers are empowered, by introducing them into mechanized system of farming, providing them with farm inputs and market opportunities. This would amount to making the study area an economic ‘growth pole’ for the northwest geo-political zone.

The study was conducted in ten purposively selected villages of Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh on the basis of large area under cotton crop and a total of 200 farmers selected by the proportionate random sampling technique. An interview schedule was prepared for collection data relating to constraint faced by cotton growers. They faced in growing cotton to lack of knowledge about improved scientific practices in cotton crop (89.50%), insufficient training programs (88.00%), insufficient demonstration of improved technology (83.50%), lack of technical knowledge about pheromone and sticking trap (81.00%), high price & poor quality of Bt. cotton seeds (79.50%), lack of information regarding upcoming abnormal weather conditions (78.00%), lack of coordination between farmer and agriculture institution (76.50%), scarcity of labour at the plucking stage (73.50%), a decline in the yield of cotton due to insects (71.00%), lack of technical knowledge about the recommended insecticide, pesticide, fungicide and herbicide (68.00%), high costs of fertilizers (65.50%), uneven electricity supply (65.00%), lack of expertise in identifying the crop's pests, diseases, and weeds (63.50%). Farmer has not proper knowledge about improved cultivation practices of cotton crop. So famer should be provided the various training programmes be organized to provide practical knowledge and field demonstrations should be arranged on improved practices.
