Un al tered monazite in the K³odzko-Z³oty Stok granitoid provided a Th-U-to tal Pb age of 329 ± 5 Ma, which con strains tim ing of the late stage of pluton em place ment. In con trast, monazite in the Jawornik granitoid re mained un al tered or was par tially re placed by sec ond ary phases, in clud ing (1) al la nite, epidote and, oc ca sion ally, ap a tite; (2) cheralite, al la nite and a mix ture of clays, Fe ox ides and pos si ble un known rare earth el e ment (REE) phases; and (3) K-feld spar and cheralite with sub se quent for ma tion of ti tan ite. Dif fer ent al ter ation prod ucts on the thin sec tion scale in di cate the lo cal char ac ter of the post-mag matic pro cesses af fect ing monazite in duced by alkali-rich flu ids. The al tered and un al tered monazite grains both yielded a Th-U-to tal Pb age of 343 ± 4 Ma. The Th-U-to tal Pb ages of the monazite in the ac com pa ny ing metasedimentary rocks ther mally af fected by in trud ing mag mas were also constrained. In the paragneiss in con tact with the Jawornik granitoid, the un al tered monazite and monazite par tially re placed by al la nite yielded an age of 344 ± 5 Ma. The monazite from the mica schist, far ther from the con tact with the granitoids, ex hibited an age of 336 ± 4.5 Ma. The 344-336 Ma ages dem on strated a re cord of monazite (re)growth dur ing pro longed Variscan meta mor phism. The pre dom i nant early Visean ages con strain the tim ing of the de vel op ment of the Z³oty Stok-Skrzynka Shear Zone and the em place ment of the Jawornik granitoid in tru sion. The age re sults, which are con sis tent with pre vi ous geo chron ol ogy, in di cate that the par tial al ter ation of the monazite did not af fect the in ter nal do mains or the main te nance of the monazite ages. Thus, this study re veals that monazite geo chron ol ogy can pro vide mean ing ful data in crys tal line rocks affected by fluid-in duced post-mag matic pro cesses.

The Kłodzko-Złoty Stok intrusion (KZSI), located in the NE part of the Bohemian Massif of Central Europe, has preserved records of the magmatic and tectonic activity of the Variscan orogeny in the Sudetes. KZSI is extraordinarily complex texturally, and shows a very wide range of chemical, isotopic and mineralogical compositions which indicates a complex, multiphase history of intrusion. New SHRIMP U-Pb zircon ages provide evidence of two magmatic episodes with a distinctive hiatus between them at ~ 326-308 Ma. The youngest dated zircons (303.8 ± 3.8/4.2 Ma) are from the Laski leucocratic hornblende-biotite monzogranite and mark a short interval of post-collisional reactivation of the magma system. Zircons from a biotite-hornblende diorite sheet from the northern part of KZSI yielded an age of 349 ± 3.4/3.7 Ma, interpreted as indicating the initial phase of an early Carboniferous, multi-pulse episode. The evolution of the magmatic system can be tied to a 334.4 ± 2.9/3.3 Ma zircon age for melanocratic syenites from Podzamek which represent lamprophyric melt. Based on textural and compositional data and field relationships we interpret the intrusion as having been tilted post-emplacement towards the NW. This, together with the new dating results, ties the early Carboniferous episode of KZSI activity and the Jawornik granitoids (5 km to the SE) to the same magmatic system and arguably to bentonites of the Paprotnia beds (5 km to the NW), all representing different levels of such a system. The newly estimated late Carboniferous age from Laski ties part of the KZSI to other late Carboniferous Sudetic intrusions and late Carboniferous-Permian volcanism.

Potassium-argon method on muscovite and biotite and chemical U-Th-Pb method on monazite have been used to date various tectonic and thermal processes affecting the Silesian orogenic wedge at the eastern Variscan front (NE Bohemian Massif). This wedge is composed of three structural units showing an increasing Barrovian metamorphic gradient from the east to the west and LP-HT reworking related to voluminous granite intrusion of the Žulová Pluton in the central part. Three groups of ages are reported: 1) Mississippian (340-320 Ma) K-Ar muscovite ages from the western kyanite zone and easternmost biotite-chlorite zone, ~320 Ma U-Th-Pb ages of monazite inclusions in syn-burial S 1 fabric preserved in garnets of the kyanite zone, 2) Pennsylvanian-Early Permian (~310-290 Ma) K-Ar ages on muscovite and biotite and matrix monazite from the sillimanite and staurolite zones of the central part of the wedge, 3) Early to Mid-Permian K-Ar muscovite and biotite and U-Th-Pb matrix monazite ages (~280-260 Ma) from the southern part of the area, adjacent to the Sudetic fault system. The sequence of obtained ages is interpreted as reflecting the Mississippian formation of the Silesian orogenic wedge that was followed by crustal-scale detachment related to Pennsylvanian-Early Permian intrusion of a voluminous Žulová Pluton accompanied by important fluid flow. Finally, the southern part of the studied domain was probably reworked by Permian fault system associated with renewed fluid activity.
