Constraints and Way Forward for Boosting Income from Dairy Farming in India: A Review

Abstract: For a sustainable livelihood model of farming under Indian conditions, dairying becomes an inevitable part along with crop production. Dairy farming has been a continuous source of income to the farmers which help them in their socioeconomic development. Increased quantity and quality of milk always fetches good returns to the farmers. Hence, it becomes the priority of almost all the farmers to extract more and more milk from the animals which may sometimes pushes them into faulty husbandry practices which ult… Show more

“…The convergence of these findings underscores the critical need for addressing infrastructural gaps to foster a conducive environment for the successful implementation of value addition practices in the dairy sector. These findings align seamlessly with the observations made by Yadav et al, (2021) [23] , who extensively documented constraints such as the poor availability of high-producing germplasm, rapidly decreasing feed and fodder resources, suboptimal husbandry practices, and a myriad of reproductive and health-related issues. The convergence of insights underscores the multi-faceted challenges faced by dairy farmers, with 'laborious work' and 'resource management limitations' emerging as central hurdles.…”

“…Therefore, it puts a leverage upon the dairy sector to fulfil the requirement of the demand which is continuously growing. The production and marketing both the area of the dairy sector must be smooth enough by the suggestions of the policy makers and government assistances, so that it can achieve the demand and supply [4,5]. Proper loan facility, technological improvements, knowledge adoption methodologies can be the tools which should be strengthened enough to assist the dairy households for promotion of the sector.…”

“…Animals are suggested to be milked under strict hygienic conditions for obtaining milk of good quantity and quality. Hands, animals' udder, teats and milk utensils should be properly sanitized before and after the milking process to ensure clean milk production through dairy animals [67][68][69][70]. Some studies showed that hygienic machine milking conditions resulted in lower SM cases than hand milking practice [9,11,71].…”
