Semantic Web services (SWS) and business process management (BPM) technologies are gradually applied in many domains like electronic commerce and enterprise application integration, which has unavoidably led to the requirements and concerns for effectively recovering from kinds of failures, especially in complex, untamed and dynamic Web environments. Generally, Exception handling is considered to be one of the most important mechanisms for dealing with exception conditions. However, current business process programming languages for semantic Web services provide almost no support for exception handling, and support platforms are weak in providing reliability and adaptability. In this paper, we present a novel framework for flexible exception handling and fault recovery of semantic business processes based on Semantic Programming Language (SPL). Especially, the framework provides forward recovery support with dynamically discovering and substituting failed services when an exception arises during execution by semantically equivalent or semantically similar Web services.

The selection of an appropriate Web service for a particular task has become a difficult challenge due to the increasing number of Web services offering similar functionalities. Therefore, when one wants to compose web services to catch a goal, she is faced with some preferences and constraints affecting the final configuration; for simplicity, the single terminology "constraint" in place of both "constraint" and "preference" is used throughout the paper. Most of these constraints in real applications are either functional or qualitative. These constraints have been scattered and unstructured until now, and therefore, when combining services, some of them are considered while many of them are forgotten. In addition to the possibility that some constraints are unthinkable to the user, some of them are overlapping and some may even be contradictory. In this paper a well-formed classification of all known composition constraints is presented. The classification structure is a tree whose parent-child relationships shape the proposed categorization. Leaves of the tree can contain metrics to satisfy the constraints, which are their parents. The tree structure of the classification helps one to deliver constraints as an input in the XML format to the composition process. Using a simple case study, the applicability of the presented classification structure is shown. Having this structure in place, the user can determine her constraints and their priorities more easily. Moreover, one can apply this structure to evaluate various composite services from user's point of view.

Along with the widespread acceptance of business process management (BPM) and Semantic Web services composition technologies, Semantic Web service oriented programming is becoming an efficient way to develop modern business applications. As Semantic Web services are inherently unreliable, how to develop reliable service oriented applications is a significant and challenging problem, especially in complex, untamed and dynamic services environment. However, current business process programming languages for Semantic Web services provide almost no support for exception handling, and runtime environments are weak in providing reliability and adaptability. In this paper, we propose an ontology based exception handling method for semantic business processes using Semantic Programming Language (SPL). We identity a new exception taxonomy described as exception ontology and devise an event-driven exception events detection mechanism. We also devise an exception handling framework based on Multi agent system for SPL program. Especially, the framework provides forward recovery support with dynamically substituting failed services when an exception arises during execution by semantically equivalent or semantically similar Web services
