CONSTRAINING THE SCATTER IN THE MASS-RICHNESS RELATION OF maxBCG CLUSTERS WITH WEAK LENSING AND X-RAY DATA

Abstract: We measure the logarithmic scatter in mass at fixed richness for clusters in the maxBCG cluster catalog, an optically selected cluster sample drawn from SDSS imaging data. Our measurement is achieved by demanding consistency between available weak lensing and X-ray measurements of the maxBCG clusters, and the X-ray luminosity-mass relation inferred from the 400d X-ray cluster survey, a flux limited X-ray cluster survey. We find σ ln M|N200 = 0.45 +0.20 −0.18 (95% CL) at N 200 ≈ 40, where N 200 is the number of… Show more

“…Removing the outlier discussed in Section 3.3.1 changes the correlation coefficient by < ∼ 0.02. The significant covariance between the scatter in Y2D and M2D we found is consistent with previous theoretical studies on covariance between cluster observables (White, Cohn & Smit 2010;Stanek et al 2010;Angulo et al 2012;Noh & Cohn 2012) and observational work (e.g., Rozo et al 2009). …”

“…This is particularly crucial for cosmological purposes with galaxy cluster counts (e.g. Rozo et al 2009). We have measured the accuracy with which we can calibrate cluster and group masses with multiple medium-band photometry mimicking the ALHAMBRA data (section §4.1).…”

“…Another is the fact that numerous authors have studied the catalogue, providing extensive information on its properties. In particular, Sheldon et al (2009) and Mandelbaum et al (2008a) have published mass estimates from weak gravitational lensing analyses, which Johnston et al (2007) and Rozo et al (2009) use to construct mass-richness (M 500 −N 200 ) relations. We apply this relation, as outlined below, to adapt our SZ filter measurements for each individual cluster according to its given richness, N 200 , as well as in our model predictions.…”

“…In their discussion, Rozo et al (2009) identify the differences between the Sheldon et al (2009) and Mandelbaum et al (2008a) mass estimates and the impact on the deduced mass-richness relation. They trace the systematically higher mass estimates of Mandelbaum et al (2008a) to these authors' more detailed treatment of photometric redshift uncertainties (Mandelbaum et al 2008b).…”
