Constraining the properties of AGN host galaxies with spectral energy distribution modelling

Abstract: Detailed studies of the spectral energy distribution (SED) of normal galaxies have increasingly been used to understand the physical mechanism dominating their integrated emission, mainly owing to the availability of high quality multi-wavelength data from the UV to the far-infrared (FIR). However, systems hosting dust-enshrouded nuclear starbursts and/or an accreting supermassive black hole (an active galactic nucleus or AGN) are especially challenging to study. This is due to the complex interplay between th… Show more

“…At variance to the previous studies, a strong dependence on the estimated stellar properties on the specifics of SED fitting was reported by Ciesla et al (2015). These authors fitted broadband photometric SEDs with cigale (Noll et al 2009) assuming exponentially decreasing and delayed SFHs, solar-metallicity Maraston (2005) SSPs, Calzetti et al (2000) dust extinction law, and dust remission.…”

It is important to bear in mind the main objective of this work is to quantify potential biases on fundamental physical properties of active galaxies estimated with purelystellar PSS that might rise owing to the introduction of a simple AGN model, as in Ciesla et al (2015).…”

“…The top five templates are taken from the SWIRE template library (Polletta et al 2007), while the bottom three templates are from Silva et al (2004) and allow for an AGN contribution that dominates in the IR but produces negligible optical or UV emission. Bongiorno et al 2007Bongiorno et al , 2012Lusso et al 2012;Rovilos et al 2014;Ciesla et al 2015). We allow for a potential AGN contribution for any galaxy with a significant X-ray detection (i.e.…”

“…For these reasons, only a few attempts exist in the literature (although the number is increasing thanks to the availability of new techniques and data). Most of these attempts suffer from simplifying one component to study the SED, either the host galaxy or the AGN, depending on the sample or the scientific goals of the study (e.g., Trichas et al 2012;Feltre et al 2013;Rocca-Volmerange et al 2013;Banerji et al 2014;Karouzos et al 2014;Leipski et al 2014;Ciesla et al 2015).…”
