Constrained reliability-based optimization of linear tuned mass dampers for seismic control

Abstract: This paper deals with the optimum design of vibration absorbers utilized to reduce undesirable vibrational effects which are originated in linear structures by seismic excitations. The single linear tuned mass dampers problem is treated and it is assumed that earthquake can be represented by a stationary filtered stochastic process. In the present problem, the objective is to minimize the maximum of the dimensionless peak of displacement of the protected system with respect to the unprotected one. Moreover, th… Show more

“…The consideration of relative motion of damper mass with respect to main mass to restrain the compressed or extended physical limits of either damper or stiffener in TMD design is also notable (Marano, Greco, Trentadue, & Chiaia, 2007;Materazzi & Ubertiniy, 2012;Yaohua & Qizhi, 2000). A penalty is imposed on the control effort to obtain controllers for a range of damper displacement amplitudes for system with space constraints (i.e.…”

“…In this regard, it is important to observe that many works (Lavan and Avishur 2013;Marano et al 2007; employ the sum of the viscous damping constants P N d i¼1 C d;i as objective function for the optimization problem. However, the cost of the dampers depends on the forces and the strokes the dampers have to withstand rather than on the values of the damper viscous constants (Bahnasy and Lavan 2013;Pollini et al 2017).…”

“…Dall'Asta et al (2017) studied the specific effects of the damper property variability by linking the tolerance allowed in quality control tests and production tests to the relevant variability of the risk of exceedance of the most interesting parameters controlling the seismic performance. Despite the importance of a probabilistic approach for the performance evaluation, only few methodologies have been developed so far (Marano et al 2007;Taflanidis 2010;) that can be employed to control the risk of failure in buildings equipped with dampers, or the costs associated to it (Taflanidis and Beck 2009;Gidaris and Taflanidis 2015). None of these studies have however investigated in depth the influence of the velocity exponent a on the design results.…”

“…In fact, Rüdinger [2] investigated the response of a nonlinear TMD subject to a stationary white noise obtaining some optimal mechanical parameters. Marano et al [3][4][5] proposed another interesting approach based on a procedure in which a single linear TMD problem is treated and on the fact that the earthquake can be represented by a stationary filtered stochastic process. In their work, the main goal is to minimize the maximum of the dimensionless peak of displacement of the protected system in respect of the unprotected one.…”
