Constitutional Factors in Institution Children

Abstract: I am deeply conscious of the honour you have done me in asking me to serve as your Chairman for the coming year. I feel this promotion is somewhat premature and that there are others better qualified for this responsible task. But I bow to your wishes and will do my best to serve you.

“…Together, these influence an individual's interpretation of interpersonal relationships in an ambiguous scene. Taking into account that institutionalized children have a history of unsuccessful interpersonal interactions (Bowlby, 1965) and feelings of insecurity (Bodman, 1950), it was justly expected that in explaining the behavior of others, the subjects would reveal motivation characterized by a fear of rejection. Connors (1963) takes n Aff further, claiming, like DeCharms (1957), that total n Aff is positively correlated with negative n Aff but not with positive n Aff, and that total n Aff results from affiliation deprivation.…”

Thus institu-tionalization, in that it deprives the child of the situation in which social skills can be reinforced (Zigler, Butterfield, & Capobianco, 1970), results in a lowering of self-esteem.…”

“…In short, that the environment of the orphanage and the poor law home lacked essential factors required for normal maturity. Indeed, I was able to show, with the co-operation of my colleagues, Miss Sykes, psychiatric social worker, and Miss MacKinlay, educational psychologist, that the orphanage children were at some disadvantage (10), but what emerged from this survey was that these children were as much handicapped by inherited constitutional factors as by their upbringing (11 ).…”
