Introduction Knowledge on ageing has an impact on the quality of care provided to older people. Although older Ghanaians provide various forms of support to family and communities, many of them experience poor nursing care in the Ghanaian health system. There is, however, dearth of evidence regarding knowledge of ageing among Ghanaian nurses. Objective This study therefore used a descriptive survey approach to investigate knowledge of graduating undergraduate nurses on physiological, and psychosocial changes in ageing. Methods Seventy graduating undergraduate nurses were surveyed to identify their knowledge on physiological and psychosocial changes leading to care needs of older people in Ghana. Three undergraduate nursing programs with gerontological nursing courses were purposively selected for the study. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data in order to present quantitative descriptions of variables in this study. Results The response rate in the study was 42%. Findings of the study show graduating undergraduate nursing students have inadequate knowledge on ageing. Several gaps in knowledge regarding ageing were identified. Although undergraduate nursing schools had gerontological nursing courses in their programs, over 90% of participating graduating nursing students indicated pain, anxiety and depression are normal aspects in the ageing process. Conclusion It is imperative to improve the current curricula content on gerontological nursing in Ghanaian nursing schools to equip nurses with knowledge and skills needed to provide quality healthcare to older people in Ghana. Improving knowledge on ageing through evidence-informed gerontological nursing curricula content will lead to better nursing care of older Ghanaians. Providing educational opportunities for improved quality nursing care of older Ghanaians is in line with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal 3, which aims at providing equal and quality healthcare to all age groups by 2030.

Common Physical Health Issues in Persons with Intellectual Disability

Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (ID) have a higher prevalence of physical health impairments leading to morbidities and premature deaths. The common conditions implicated are epilepsy, gastrointestinal concerns such as constipation and dyspepsia, sensory impairments, musculoskeletal issues, and thyroid disorders. Chronic diseases including hypertension, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndromes occur at an earlier age and nearly half of these conditions are detected only by screening. Annual health checks by primary care teams in the community are being implemented in many countries. Comprehensive health checks using standard questionnaires and preventative health check guidelines specially designed for persons with intellectual disabilities are of great help to primary care physicians in busy clinical settings. Addressing the concerns raised by healthcare professionals on the lack of knowledge and understanding of health needs of persons with ID can be easily addressed by appropriate training programmes. Eliminating communication barriers can be achieved by appropriate training programmes and implementing the use of easy-read materials. Reasonable adjustments must be implemented in practices to facilitate better health experiences for persons with ID and their caregivers.

Constipation is a condition that is very prevalent and is reported in up to 40 percent of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Constipation in this patient population is most commonly secondary to neuromuscular abnormalities, immobility, suboptimal diet, and medication side effects. History taking is frequently limited in adults with IDD due to communication barriers, often leading to a missed diagnosis of constipation. Inadequately treated constipation may lead to adverse effects including behavioral disturbances, fecal impaction, intestinal obstruction, and even death from intestinal perforation and sepsis. As a result, a high index of suspicion must exist for this patient population. Treatment in these patients requires an individualized approach, to reduce the constipation and its associated health complications.
