Constant Switching Frequency and Torque Ripple Minimization of DTC of Induction Motor Drives with Three-level NPC Inverter

Abstract: Direct Torque Control (DTC) is widely applied for ac motor drives as it offers high performance torque control with a simple control strategy. However, conventional DTC poses some disadvantages especially in term of variable switching frequency and large torque ripple due to the utilization of torque hysteresis controller. Other than that, performance of conventional DTC fed by two-level inverter is also restricted by the limited numbers of voltage vectors which lead to inappropriate selection of voltage vecto… Show more

“…It relies less on machine parameters [15], [16] and does not require the complicated speed encoder, inner current regulation loop and field orientation block [17]. However, this system addressed two main problems namely high torque ripple and the variation of the switching frequency of the inverter according to operating conditions [18]- [27].…”

“…FOC strategies are widely used in many modern high-performance AC drive applications, especially TPIM electric drives, due to their high accuracy. When compared to the traditional direct torque control (DTC) strategy, TPIM drives achieve high performance with a constant switching frequency and low torque ripples [24], [25]. In order to control the two-phase motor using the FOC strategy, two unbalanced transformation matrices have been presented and used in [15].…”

“…The proposed control structure can be illustrated as shown in Figure 3. The switching frequency of inverter will be determined by the carrier frequency [21]. It should be noted that the carrier frequency is set at a constant and high frequency to establish high control bandwidth.…”
