Constant current: A method for obtaining hysteresis loops in ferroelectric materials

Abstract: A new method is proposed to obtain hysteresis loops in ferroelectric materials in which the sample is submitted to a constant electric current. This technique was applied on poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVDF, biaxially stretched samples and the hysteresis loops of the electric displacement and electric polarization versus the electric field compared well with those obtained with the Sawyer–Tower method. The constant current method is advantageous in that no measuring amplifiers are needed and it is insensitive t… Show more

“…[18][19][20][21] The most common one is the classical Sawyer-Tower circuit 18 where the ferroelectric hysteresis loop ͑polarization P versus applied field E app ͒ is usually monitored with an oscilloscope. A reference capacitor C s in series to the ferroelectric capacitor under test is used to measure the charge on that ferroelectric capacitor Q m ͑Q m ϳ P͒.…”

“…Over the past few decades, various methods for obtaining the electrical polarization loops of capacitors have been presented. [1][2][3][4][5] The most often quoted method of hysteresis measurement is based mainly on the Sawyer-Tower method (STM), 1) which utilizes a sensing capacitor connected in series with the sample that collects the integrated current to determine the polarization charge. In the virtual ground method (VGM), 2) a technique of charge measurement, which converts current to charge, has recently changed from utilizing a large sensing capacitor to utilizing a virtualground operational-amplifier as a current-to-voltage converter with an integrating capacitor.…”

“…More recently, Giacometti et al proposed a CC method for obtaining the hysteresis loops of ferroelectric materials. 4,5) In this method, a constant charging current source is applied to a thick ferroelectric film (approximately 12 mm thick), to measure the corresponding voltage, which is almost noiseless.…”

“…More recently, Giacometti and co-workers 12 proposed another method to measure P S where the compensation of the sample's conductivity and permittivity is done by numerical corrections of the measured v(t). ͑4͒ presents a simple exponential decay behavior.…”
