Consolidation mechanism, microstructural evolution and corrosion resistance of Inconel 625 coatings

Abstract: The inter-relationships between geometrical properties, microstructural characteristics and corrosion resistance on one hand and laser-material interaction parameter (α) on the other hand are examined. A laser-material interaction parameter within the range of 599 ≤ α ≤ 400 J.s g −1 mm −1 imparted optimum characteristics of microstructure, microhardness and corrosion resistance. The consolidation mechanism of the coatings indicates that this parameter ensures the formation of a double 'burn-in' macrostructure … Show more

“…Material coating is a method of applying a thin layer of material on parent substrates in addition to enhancing their surface qualities [70][71][72]. Surface coating techniques, according to certain previous research publications, play a critical role in improving corrosion resistance qualities [73][74][75][76]. Surface coating is used to extend the life of several industrial products that regularly fail due to surface wear, including as gears, boiler surfaces, and bearings [77][78][79].…”

“…Inconel 625 (IN625) is a Ni‐based superalloy commonly used to manufacture high added value components due to its outstanding mechanical properties, at both cryogenic and high temperature, as well as its excellent resistance to different corrosive media, as reported by several authors such as Rombouts et al, [ 1 ] Hong et al, [ 2 ] Olakanmi et al, [ 3 ] and Abioye et al [ 4 ] For example, IN625 is used in the oil and gas sector for components subjected to high mechanical stresses in sea water, components exposed to flue gas, or flare stacks on offshore oil platforms. [ 5,6 ] Leyens and Beyer [ 7 ] also reported the applications of IN625 in the energy production industrial sector while Gasser et al [ 8 ] highlighted its application in the aerospace sector.…”

“…Inconel 625, a nickel-based non-magnetic super alloy consisting of nickel-chromium-molybdenum, has high corrosion resistance and excellent mechanical properties [7,8]. Chromium prevents corrosion by form-ing a layer of Cr2O3, and molybdenum provides resistance to crevice and pitting corrosion [9].…”
