Consistent Visual Analyses of Intrasubject Data

Abstract: Visual inspection of single‐case data is the primary method of interpretation of the effects of an independent variable on a dependent variable in applied behavior analysis. The purpose of the current study was to replicate and extend the results of DeProspero and Cohen (1979) by reexamining the consistency of visual analysis across raters. We recruited members of the board of editors and associate editors for the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis to judge graphs on a 100‐point scale of experimental control… Show more

“…This latter method adds a mean line to the trend line and moves both lines in the conservative (desired by the professional) direction by a quarter of a standard deviation before carrying out the statistical test. Given that the majority of studies indicate insufficient interrater agreement (e.g., Danov & Symons, 2008;Ottenbacher, 1990; except when using well-trained analysts making dichotomous decisions on experimental control; Kahng et al, 2010), it is important that training in structured criteria has been shown to increase the confidence in the decisions (Hagopian et al, 1997;Skiba, Deno, 6 Marston, & Casey, 1989) and to decrease Type I and Type II error rates (Colón, 2006;Fisher et al, 2003).…”

“…Visual inspection is the prevailing form of data analysis for single-case research (Kahng et al, 2010). Moreover, considering the generally stable baseline and the clear change found in follow-up for one participant, it is believed that visual inspection is a reliable tool for data analysis in this current study.…”

“…To address our specific use case, we used a variation of Alternating Treatment Design (ATD) that applies A and B phases completely at random [15,27]. Random assignment of treatment phases helps to overcome common criticisms regarding the internal validity of SCDs [24,32,37,45,51,59,66] and allows the use of a statistical method for SCDs called randomization tests [15,27]. Our prior work summarizes the design rationale behind the SCD framework in more depth [34].…”
