Massive type IIA supergravity is shown to admit a consistent truncation on the six-sphere to maximal supergravity in four dimensions with a dyonic ISO(7) gauging. We obtain the complete, non-linear embedding of all the D = 4 fields into the IIA metric and form potentials, and show its consistency. We first rewrite the IIA theory in an SO(1, 3) × SL(7)-covariant way. Then, we employ an N = 8 SL(7)-covariant restriction of the D = 4 tensor hierarchy in order to find the full embedding. The redundant D = 4 degrees of freedom introduced by the tensor hierarchy can be eliminated by writing the embedding in terms of the field strengths and exploiting the restricted duality hierarchy. In particular, closed expressions for the Freund-Rubin term are found using this technique which reveal a pattern valid for other truncations. Finally, we show that the present N = 8 truncation of massive IIA on S 6 and the N = 2 truncation obtained when S 6 is equipped with its nearly-Kähler structure, overlap in the N = 1, G 2 -invariant sector of the former.

We study D ≥ 4-dimensional half-maximal flux backgrounds using exceptional field theory. We define the relevant generalised structures and also find the integrability conditions which give warped half-maximal Minkowski D and AdS D vacua. We then show how to obtain consistent truncations of type II / 11-dimensional SUGRA which break half the supersymmetry. Such truncations can be defined on backgrounds admitting exceptional generalised SO(d−1−N ) structures, where d = 11−D, and N is the number of vector multiplets obtained in the lower-dimensional theory. Our procedure yields the most general embedding tensors satisfying the linear constraint of half-maximal gauged SUGRA. We use this to prove that all D ≥ 4 half-maximal warped AdS D and Minkowski D vacua of type II / 11-dimensional SUGRA admit a consistent truncation keeping only the gravitational supermultiplet. We also show to obtain heterotic double field theory from exceptional field theory and comment on the M-theory / heterotic duality. In five dimensions, we find a new SO(5, N ) double field theory with a (6 + N )-dimensional extended space. Its section condition has one solution corresponding to 10-dimensional N = 1 supergravity and another yielding six-dimensional N = (2, 0) SUGRA.

Type IIB string theory on a 5-sphere gives rise to  = 8, SO(6) gauged supergravity in five dimensions. Motivated by the fact that this is the context of the most widely studied example of the AdS/CFT correspondence, we undertake an investigation of its critical points. The scalar manifold is an E 6(6) ∕USp(8) coset, and the challenge is that it is 42-dimensional. We take a Machine Learning approach to the problem using TensorFlow, and this results in a substantial increase in the number of known critical points. Our list of 32 critical points contains all five of the previously known ones, including an  = 2 supersymmetric point identified by Khavaev, Pilch and Warner.
