Consistent truncation of d = 11 supergravity on AdS 4 × S 7

Abstract: We study the system of equations derived twenty five years ago by B. de Wit and the first author [Nucl. Phys. B281 (1987) 211] as conditions for the consistent truncation of elevendimensional supergravity on AdS 4 × S 7 to gauged N = 8 supergravity in four dimensions. By exploiting the E 7(7) symmetry, we determine the most general solution to this system at each point on the coset space E 7(7) /SU(8). We show that invariants of the general solution are given by the fluxes in eleven-dimensional supergravity. T… Show more

“…For that, it suffices to find an S 2 fiber inside the metric (2.1a). We can write the CP 2 metric as (see (A.6)) 6) where the left-invariant one-forms are 8) so this combination forms an S 2 . We then have two obvious possibilities for S 2 embedding:…”

“…The four dimensional N = 8 SO(8)-gauged supergravity [6] arises as a consistent truncation of 11 dimensional supergravity (low energy of M-theory) on the seven sphere [7,8]. But it was pointed out in [9][10][11] that the original de Wit-Nicolai solution [6] is, in fact, just one particular point in a continuous one-parameter family of solutions, where the parameter ω ∈ [0, π/8] determines the linear combination of the SO(8) electric and magnetic gauge fields.…”
