The Kilpisjärvi village has an active research station owned by the University of Helsinki, where decades of intensive study have covered topics such as plant and animal ecology (Aho and Kalela, 1966; Kemppinen et al, 2021a; Peña-Aguilera et al, 2023), geomorphology (Aalto and Luoto, 2014), geodiversity (Salminen et al, 2023), geophysics of ice and snow (Leppäranta et al, 2016; Raidla et al, 2015), and paleolimnology (Kauppila and Salonen, 1997).
