In this paper we present all-order quantum mechanical calculations of 7 Be breakup on heavy ( 208 Pb) and light ( 12 C) targets. We examine the issues concerning the extraction of the astrophysical S-factor S34(0) from the breakup data. We discuss the interplay between Coulomb and nuclear breakup, and the importance of higher-order couplings on the cross section. We show that nuclear and Coulomb contributions are not separable using the standard angular selection criterion as nuclear breakup remains large for small scattering angles, even for the heavy target. However, by selecting an upper limit on the relative energy between the final fragments, the contribution from the nuclear breakup can be significantly reduced such that Coulomb breakup is the main reaction mechanism. We show that the extraction of the asymptotic normalization coefficient may require more careful consideration of the nuclear interior than previously used.

We report the first calculations of cross sections for the radiative capture reactions 3 H(α, γ) 7 Li and 3 He(α, γ) 7 Be below 2 MeV which use wave functions derived from realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions by the variational Monte Carlo technique. After examining several small corrections to the dominant E1 operator, we find energy dependences for the low-energy S-factors which agree reasonably with experimental measurements. There is no contradiction with the previous theoretical understanding of these processes, but the zero-energy derivative of the 3 H(α, γ) 7 Li S-factor is smaller than in most models. While this method can in principle predict cross section normalizations, the normalizations of our results are mostly too low.

Contributions to the predominantly E2 Coulomb excitation of the first excited states of 6U, 7U, lOB, 11 B, 12C and 17 0 due to virtual E1 transitions through intermediate states are calculated using for all states shell model wavefunctions of the lowest admissible configurations, obtained with a realistic Hamiltonian. When harmonic oscillator single-particle wavefunctions are used, the contributions can be calculated rigorously but are generally less than the experimental values. Increases due to use of Woods-Saxon wavefunctions are estimated in a semi-quantitative way. For 17 0, the additional increase due to admixtures from higher configurations in the wavefunctions is also considered.
