Considering the use of niobium and titanium to enhance electrical and mechanical properties of copper at higher operational temperature application

Abstract: Electrical energy transmission materials (cables) are required to have a good combination of high-strength and high electrical conductivity properties, to avoid loss of electrical power between places of production and places of usage. In this study, pure Copper (Cu), Niobium (Nb) and Titanium (Ti) powders of the same purity and particles sizes of 99.0% and − 325 meshes respectively, were used. Niobium and titanium were added to the matrix of pure copper to form the specimens (Cu-2wt% Nb, Cu-5wt% Nb, Cu-2 wt% … Show more

“…However, the presence of niobium oxides (NbO x ), copper oxides (CuO x ), and titanium oxides (TiO x ) contributed, immensely, to the NTE of the CuNbTiB 2 composite (Figs. 5,6,7,8,9,10) in this study.…”

“…However, the extinction of the peaks in this study, which are responsible for the proper densifications, according to the work of Diouf and Molinari [25], could be attributed to the presence of dissolved oxygen in the samples, as can be seen in the SEM and EDS images (Figs. 5,6,7,8,9,10). The presence of oxygen in the sintering samples, during the spark plasma sintering process, hinders the densification mechanism [26].…”

“…Additionally, Nb has a low density, which helps maintain the lightweight nature of magnesium composites [27,54]. Nb reinforcement can also improve the wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and hightemperature stability [55][56][57]. Furthermore, Nb has a good biocompatibility, which makes it an attractive reinforcement material for biomedical applications [58].…”
