Considerations and Practical Options for Measuring Muscle Strength: A Narrative Review

Abstract: Muscle strength impairments are related to mobility limitations and other untoward outcomes. This narrative review, therefore, describes considerations relative to the definition and measurement of muscle strength. Thereafter, practical options for measuring muscle strength are described and their clinimetric properties are delineated. Information provided herein may help students, clinicians, and researchers select the strength tests best suited to their research needs and limitations.

“…78,79 HGS, which can be considered a measure of muscle function, may also be associated with dynamic, physical functions. 80 Cross-sectional evidence from 110 women aged 67.4 ± 5.9 years indicated that HGS on the dominant (r = -0.20; p = 0.03) and non-dominant hand (r = -0.20; p = 0.03) is correlated with the timed-up-and-go test. 81 The 6-min walk test is a popular method for assessing physical functioning and fitness.…”

“…Therapist assessed: resisted by therapist either through range or statically. 32 Swelling A measure of the size and width of bleed or affected limb. • EQ5D-5L (Euroqol 5-Dimensions 5-Levels) 16 The EQ5D was generally viewed positively as it enabled all participants to reference their normal, rather than asking about specific activities.…”

“…Specifically, the lower limb muscle strength, especially in the ankle dorsiflexors, is a significant predictor of walking speed and distance, as reflected in the Timed Up and Go Test (TUG) [2,3], the 6-Minute Walk Test [2], and the Five Times Sit-To-Stand Test (FTSTS) [4]. Clinically, muscle strength is usually assessed manually or with a handheld dynamometer [5]. However, these assessments measure the open kinetic chain muscle strength and thus cannot simulate the actions used in daily life.…”
