Consideration of Ethics in Systemic Thinking

Abstract: This paper probes the relationship between systemic thinking and ethics. A distinction is made between systemic thinking and systems thinking to illustrate debates around the ethical issues of tackling societal issues in a systemic way. Drawing on three prominent ethical theories, namely utilitarianism, deontological theory and virtue ethics, the argument that systemic thinking should embrace ethics is developed. This article suggests that systemic thinking fosters the virtue of toleration; defends the autonom… Show more

“…In the literature, different scholars attempted to demonstrate the mutual inclusiveness of "systems thinking" and other related terms such as big-picture thinking [74][75][76][77], holistic thinking [78][79][80][81], multidimensional thinking [82][83][84][85] and systemic thinking [86][87][88][89]. A thorough review of the literature shows that researchers focused on the identification of systemic approaches to deal with complex system problems.…”

“…In this paper, 'systemic' means that knowledge is subjective while embracing the invariant features in systems, such as asymmetry, nonlinearity, and feedback loops (Flood 2010;Tuan 2018). Furthermore, systemic thinking embraces democracy, learning, and upholding participatory design (Tuan 2018;Tuan and Shaw 2016). These features embrace diversity and help to reach consensus in a design.…”

“…The systemic approaches embrace subjective knowledge and participatory learning. Furthermore, in a systemic world, manifold nonlinear and asymmetric relationships could exist between system elements (Flood 2010;Tuan 2018;Tuan and Shaw 2016). Instead of probing into the relationship of 'more important', the proposed methodology argues for scrutinizing the relationship of 'helping to achieve', which is also amenable to transitive inference (Warfield and Cárdenas 1994).…”

“…Rooted in systems thinking, SPT promotes a comprehensive understanding of ethical matters that are compatible with virtue ethics, deontology, and utilitarianism. This compatibility stems from systems thinking embracing “the virtue of toleration of … different vantage points,” “echoes deontological ethics… [because the] autonomous nature of systemic thinking inspires people to determine the maxims of ethical actions,” and “promotes good for the people in an equitable fashion” (Tuan & Shaw, 2016, p. 56).…”
